EAST RUTHERFORD, N.J. -- The New Jersey Nets have reached a tentative agreement to buy out the contract of eight-time All-Star center Dikembe Mutombo, a deal that is believed to be worth approximately $30 million.

Nets president Rod Thorn and David Falk, Mutombo's agent, brokered the deal on Saturday. It probably will be finalized Monday, Thorn said.

The move saves the Nets about $7 million in salary owed to Mutombo through the end of next season, and it gives the four-time NBA defensive player of the year a chance to find a team where he can contribute.</div>Go to the Raptors!

i diddent expect that....waht happends if mouning gets hurt or has a relapes? oh well it saves 7 min in the cap, maybe the knicks can sign him(doubt it)

Collins may still be the starter too, the nets are being very careful with Zo..as they should.

watch Mutombo go and join the lakers for the minimum. wagging his fingers at the nets bench in the finals.

That would be cool, Shaq need a back-up.

But aren't the Lakers full? I think I read that somewhere.

Just about any team in the league could use him as a cheap player who can still be a great defender for a few minutes every game.

Wow. I thought the Nets would try and see how everything would go with Zo and Deke. Oh well. Nearly half the league's gonna look to sign Deke.

You mean we as the 76ers? You remember how it was the last time Mutombo was on the 6ers, right?

Yeah I do. The first year was awesome, we went to the Finals thanks to him. Second year was different, but he has knowledge of the game, and having him as a backup center is rather rewarding.

Going to the finals wasn't thanks to Mutombo. They 6ers had one of the better records in the league before they got him, but were barely sub .500 I believe with him. Mutombo and Phili just doesn't fit. I'm not even sure that Mutombo and any team really fit right now.

deke has 5-6 teams on his list including knicks phili and toronto he will NOT go to an western conference team and i dout he will be a bull

You wanna re-think that statement?

it would've been cool to have him in the Nets bench...even ZO is excited to play with him...

was* excited to play with him

Would have been very exciting seeing them on the court at the same time, esp. when blocking shots in the same possession.

i really think this was a HUGE mistake in waving him, but hey when the days over we gotta relize it a buissnes

it's a business, and Deke is only usefull if you use his strenghts. I think Coach Scott has certain ideas about the game, ideas where Mutombo doesn't fit in. He likes the running game, and Mutombo is clearly not a runner, where Zo / Collins / Williams are capable of playing that game.
And, more important, with this move it seems like the Nets organisation has a lot of faith in Zo's health, so that's good new for Nets' fans!

i know what you mean...but he is still capable of giving of 10 minutes of hustle off the bench...but it clearly slows down the Nets offense...which defeats the purpose of JKidd...and i agree that they are showing a lot of faith in Zo's health...they wouldn't waive Deke if Zo aint healthy
