Prompted by Dan Patrick asking Grant Hill this morning which NBA coach would be the first drafted for a pick-up game, it occurred to me that it might be cool if some of the coaches donned the uniforms for all-star weekend. I know they cancelled the Legends game 20 years ago because old people have a tendency to get injured, but I think most of the coaches (at least, those that are former players) keep themselves in decent shape, and probably often hit the court with their teams during practice.

Looking through the list of current head coaches though, I think that the West coaches would dominate the East. Stotts and Corbin could work the post (along with McHale, if he's feeling well), with Kerr and Hornacek bombing away from the outside, Monty Williams on the wing, and any combination of Shaw, Scott, Brooks, and Rivers at the guard spots. The East might have the best player in Kidd, but he would have very little help.

Not a bad idea. Personally if you do it though I think you have to go 3 on 3 (unless you get every single head coach in the NBA on-board which would be awesome but I very much doubt). You want to make sure there are plenty of subs and they all do short shifts.

Now you could go back to 5 on 5 if you have enough assistant coaches also playing but most fans won't know them enough to care. I suppose diehards would and you would get some great big man coaches in this case.

Another thought--what if we had a referees' game? That might be fun too. Or even refs vs. coaches!

You really want coaches walking around on crutches for the remainder of the season? The sidelines are crowded enough.....

I like the Coach vs Ref's game suggestion the most. Then you only need 13 or so of each of the coaches and refs to play.

I think they should bring back the Legends game. Would be great to see Jordan and Olajuwon among others play again.

That's where i got the "crutches" thing. The last legends game had 2 ACL injuries and a ruptured Achilles.

It's not like an injury to a coach would be career, or even season ending. You can coach on crutches, or even in a wheel chair (or a throne, if you're Phil Jackson).

Yes, and let the players vote on which coaches get to play. That would give the players who got snubbed by the coaches a chance for a retaliatory snub.

I agree the West team is loaded, but forget McHale. The guy can barely walk.

Coaches vs. Refs: Not only would the refs slaughter the coaches just based on conditioning, they'd hold a grudge for some on-court slight or another. If you haven't noticed, NBA refs can be petty egotistical little fuckers. Not good.

I want to see a Hall of Fame players 3 on 3 halfcourt game. It's a better talent pool than coaches

All Star Basketball Wives Strip Off. Let's push the envelope a little bit.

I want to see Stockton Malone Pippen Jordan Drexler Sabonis, Rodman, all of those guys playing 3 on 3 halfcourt. It would be a crowd pleaser.

Something tells me Lauren Holtkamp would come out the MVP.
