Good read, interesting tidbit
There were other challenges McMillan faced during his Portland tenure aside from all the string of injuries and that last season – the handling of Nicolas Batum.

Batum grew frustrated with his role in McMillan’s offense. Batum’s agent Bouna Ndiaye told CSNNW.com that Batum didn’t like playing the role of Bruce Bowen, a stand in the corner player that only shoots the ball when open and defends.

Under coach Terry Stotts, Batum has flourished into one of the most complete players in the league and he’s frequently on the triple-double alert.

When Portland acquired one-time All-Star Gerald Wallace via trade midway through the 2010-11 season, McMillan had a tough decision to make. And he made it. It’s one of the only things he regrets during his time as the Trail Blazers coach.

“Really, I felt like Nicolas was going to be a good player and a talented player. Again, he was drafted with that in mind, with being a part of the future. Probably the one thing when I look back on my time in Portland that I regret was the decision to take Nicolas out of that lineup and starting Gerald Wallace,” McMillan admitted. “That was something that I was battling with the time I was there.

“I knew that Nic was going to be the future. I knew Wesley [Matthews] was going to be the future. Those were the two best wings for us. But bringing in a veteran such as Gerald Wallace and trying to convince him to come off the bench and he did for about a week or two. He felt like he needed to be in the starting lineup. I went against what I really believed was right which was Nicolas and Wesley playing with LaMarcus because they defended and they shot the ball at the two and three positions. But we gave him as much as I felt like he could handle at the time.”

I'll never like Nate as a coach, but there's no doubt that he's a class act.

Class act? Sure. Coach? Beyond an assistant, never again.

I thought the Oregonian article by Joe Freeman actually was more thorough, and more honest in terms of getting words from Nate.

http://www.oregonlive.com/blazers/i...lan_returns_to_portland_content_with_pac.html

“He has a calming influence and just brings strength to all of our messages,” Vogel says. “I’ve asked Nate to really help me manage the game … because he’s been in that seat. What rotation is best against this team? Or what rotation is our best lineup? Who needs minutes? Who needs touches? All those decisions. (The players) really respect him, really respect where he’s been. And his message resonates with these guys. He’s had a very strong bond with them already in the short time he’s been here.”

George says McMillan has dramatically improved his defense. Hill says McMillan has helped his offense, his leadership and his mental makeup. Lance Stephenson says McMillan has done wonders with his shot, his confidence and his will.

“He talks to me before every game and makes sure my head is right,” Stephenson says. “He calms me down. He’s just a voice that brings positive thoughts to me even when I’m down. He picks me up.”

But McMillan, in what surely will not come as a surprise to Blazers fans, doesn’t sugarcoat his message. Early in training camp, McMillan brought a practice to a screeching halt with a tongue-lashing because he was displeased with the Pacers’ effort and focus.

Yes, “Sarge” has surfaced in Indianapolis, too.

“He knows how to win, he knows good teams and he knows bad teams and he knows what good teams need to do to win,” Hill says. “He sees something special in us and he challenges us every day in practice, and his voice echoes through the room when he’s talking. We listen with open ears because we know that we need that to be the best we can be.”

About Batum...

No, his lone regret came one season prior, when the Blazers acquired Wallace in a trade with Charlotte. When Wallace first joined the Blazers, McMillan brought him off the bench because he liked his presence in the second unit and didn’t want to stunt the growth of Batum. But behind the scenes, Wallace sulked, and eventually McMillan relented and shifted Batum to the second unit.

“As I look back on it now, if I would have done anything different, I would have kept Nic in the starting lineup,” McMillan says. “Wallace wanted to go in the lineup, and I ended up trying to make that work. But I felt like Nic and Wesley (Matthews) were the right wings for us — and I think right now it’s showing that they’re the right wings. If I had that, to do it over again, I wouldn’t have done that. Nic was the future.”

I think Nate deserves a huge round of applause when he is announced. Whatever his flaws as a coach, he guided the club out of the Jailblazer era and into 50 win seasons. And he did it with professionalism and class indeed.

Most definitely a class act. I still remember the page add he took out in the paper thanking the fans after he was fired.

I was in the Rose Garden the night he got fired. It was the first day of the 2011 NCAA games at what was then the RG. It got announced late in the night during the fourth game of day one, which was a Thursday, I believe.

The fans should cheer him when he's announced, because he was a class act. They should cheer even louder after we beat the Pacers

Wanna bet? Nate definitely has more to learn but with the shortage of good coaches these days he'll get a shot somewhere at sometime.

So he starts batum instead of Wallace, deflating Wallace's trade value so we can't get Brooklyns 2012 pick. With better protection on it we get it in 2013 instead, somewhere in the 20's. The Nets take big name Harrison Barnes and the Warriors get the hometown kid in Lillard. With Barnes in the mix and a lineup of Williams, Johnson, Wallace, Humphries and Lopez with Barnes as the 6th man. With Barnes in the mix they don't include Pierce in the boston trade and don't have to send over all those 1sts for KG. The Warriors still go after Iggy to help their wing defense and move Lillard to 6th man. With no Lillard in Portland the future is bleak & Aldridge goes through with his trade demand. We do the rumored Cleveland deal for Tristan Thompson, #1 & #19. We are then building around Thompson, Batum, Matthews and presumably Oladipo with no hope in sight at PG or Center. So with all of this being said it was absolutely the right move to start Wallace over Batum in order to increase his trade value. Don't feel bad Nate you did what was best for the franchise, even if we didn't know it at the time.

TL;DR: Nate McMillan was not the coach we deserved but the coach we needed. Nothing less than a knight. Shining.

I think Nate will get a nice round of applause tonight. I know I will applaud him. MM won't be there so he shouldn't have to worry.

I'm gonna be PISSED if a bunch of people boo Nate tonight. Say what you want about his basketball philosophy, he took over a coach's nightmare of a roster while it was being burned to the ground, and restored the authority, dignity, character, and integrity of the position.

I wonder where KP will sit tonight...

I already read a few days ago pn this board that McMillan said he shouldn't have started Gerald Wallace. Old news

Also, he's wrong. Meek little Batum sucked compared to Wallace, who played like a man.

And shot like a child on the road. :( I really liked Wallace, but playing him because of his contract size rather than because him being the best fit was a mistake. I have to respect Nate for being able to admit that.

Smart of Nate to try and weasel his way into the head coaching position in Indiana. I just think Vogel won't choke and give it up.
