FEDERAL WAY, Wash. - The Tacoma woman who died in a one-car accident on Interstate 5 in Federal Way Saturday morning is Chyna J. Thomas, 22, the sister of NBA star Isaiah Thomas, according to family friends.

Chyna Thomas died at the scene of the accident on the shoulder of I-5, according to the Washington State Patrol who identified her.

The wreck occurred around 5 a.m. on southbound Interstate 5 near South 288th Street, according to the Washington State Patrol.

Witnesses reported that the car, a 1998 Toyota Camry, was being driven normally at first.

“All of a sudden it started to drift very casually onto the left shoulder,” State Patrol spokesman Trooper Nick King said.

The car traveled about 50 feet partially off the roadway until it hit a Jersey barrier.

“That vaulted the vehicle head-on into the sign post,” King said.

The car came to rest on top of the barrier and against a large metal pole holding a carpool sign on the shoulder of the freeway.

The State Patrol reports that Chyna Thomas was not wearing her seat belt.

Chyna Thomas’s Facebook page’s profile lists her a package handler for Federal Express and a former student at Tacoma’s School of the Arts.

Isaiah Thomas is a point guard for the Boston Celtics. He’s a former Curtis High School student and University of Washington graduate.

The Celtics are scheduled to play the Chicago Bulls in the NBA playoffs Sunday in Boston.

That looks like a bad accident but not a fatal one.

She fell asleep otw to work. My ex is friends with the family and got the details. I met Isaiah Sr a few years ago and he was a super cool guy. Tragedy, needless to say. I read that IT is staying in bean town to play, but we'll see. Just brutal news.

No seatbelt apparently

Awful. And the Bulls may beat the Celtics.

Thats very sad to hear. The Celtics are a classy organization, I bet they told Isiah he coudl take off as much time as he needed.

That was the strangest accident. I remember watching that race and then suddenly they announced he was dead.
I was at Greg Biffle's bar in Vancouver playing pool. Saw the accident when everyone said he wrecked. No biggie. A while later I heard everyone say "dad's dead"

We had a Ford Raptor towed in that looked like it got hit by a garbage truck. We were sure the owner was dead or on life support. The owner was a small woman who woke up in the hospital. She said all she could remember was a small car barreling towards her. I actually googled a vehicle fatality in Las Vegas before we found out she was alive.

You can't always tell by looking at it. We had a Tacoma at work that looked like it fell into the Grand Canyon and the guy walked in and got his belongings out of it. Just like Earnhardt Sr's crash didn't look like anything.

What bodyman said. I witnessed a double-fatality car accident about 4 years ago, which occurred about 60 feet from my apartment. Both the passenger and driver had been drinking, and speed had also played a factor.

The Ford F150 they were driving took out a light post and snapped a tree entirely in half in the center median, and the passenger side looked just fine. But the driver's side was completely blown outward, and the passenger was hanging out of the car. The driver was killed on impact, and had to be cut from the vehicle.

One angle of a picture does not always tell the whole story. Thoughts and prayers to Thomas's family.

Seatbelts people. I had a girlfriend that wouldn't wear hers because she had a friend in highschool who was riding in a Jeep Wrangler that flipped upside down in a creek and she drowned. The exception to the rule.

Years ago when I lived in Vancouver my wife, then girlfriend went to the mall. Live on the news was that accident where a bus rearended a pickup and pushed it into a Subaru that went under a flatbed truck. She had an S10 with ugly custom wheels. I saw that it was a silver or gray Ford Ranger. All you could see of the truck was the bed sticking straight up to the sky. I knew the passengers were dead, if it had been my wife's truck I'd have known she was gone before the cops. I hate when the news shows current accidents.

Really sad story. Tragic in that her death would likely have been prevented if she had simply worn her seatbelt.

Irrelevant, but is anyone besides me surprised that the younger sister of an NBA star was driving a 20 year old car?

RIP

IT doesn't make the money of an NBA star.
