The Battered Bastards of Baseball, a new documentary that will debut on Netflix on July 11, recaps the incredible story of the minor league Portland Mavericks.

Founded in 1973 by baseball-mad Bonanza actor Bing Russell, the Mavericks played in the Class A Northwest League despite no affiliation with a Major League franchise.

Playing against highly touted prospects, Russell’s group of has-beens and misfits produced winning records in all five of their seasons before the Class AAA Pacific Coast League expanded back into Portland, paying Russell a record $206,000 for the territorial rights.

Through original game footage and contemporary interviews with key figures in Mavericks history, filmmakers Chapman and Maclain Way — two of Russell’s grandsons — expose the team’s countless quirks and the secrets to its unlikely success.

Watched it the other day. Its interesting and I had no idea about the whole story of the Mavericks. I had vaguely heard of them. Cool story. The documentary kind of lacked a little excitement. It would have been cool if they talked about them doing blow and banging hookers or something rambunctious.

Is that at Walker Stadium? I've umpired games there tons, and that place sucks.

I liked the clips where they were all smoking and drinking beer in the clubhouse. Very interesting part of local history that I knew nothing about.

They really did represent the quirkiness of Portland better than anything I've seen.

IF the city were to land a team I'd really like to see this name revived.

The Portland Mavericks

Just watched the documentary on Netflix and was really proud to see that one of my all time favorite baseball teams got some recognition. Bing Russell is smiling from somewhere right now. What a team and just goes to show Portland will pack the house for the independant strangely wonderful team Bing assembled in the 70's. If you haven't seen the Portland Mavericks or the documentary, I highly recommend it. Well done piece of film. Anyone else remember those days! Brought back some good memories from my first love in sports, baseball.

Such a good show. I thoroughly enjoyed it.

It's funny because I realized, as I was watching, that Jon Yoshiwara was my middle school gym teacher. I had no idea that he used to play baseball.

Still think we'd do amazing with an MLB team.

I am!!

Those were some pretty wild times in town. JoGarza was my hero! Oh, and who could forget Jim Bunning (Ball Four) rekindling his notorious career with the Mavs! That was awesome!

This is an entertaining documentary. Watched it last night..

I’m old enough to remember that it was Jim Bouton and NOT Jim Bunning……….the only notoriety Bunning had was as an ultra-conservative congressman from Kentucky after he retired from baseball. Give me Bouton any day……

This is a duplicate thread...we had a long thread about the Mavericks a few years back...I remember them ..there's a Netflix documentary on the team as well.

I'm old enough to remember the thread about this documentary when it came out several years ago

Exactly. Not sure why I typed Jim Bunning! :)

Heh, sorry I missed the thread years ago.

Ya made me look. :)

I'm down. Just get baseball here!!
Just get National League baseball here……so I can see the Giants numerous times every year without having to travel…..an American League team would be virtually useless to BG and I………

You should let them know that. It'll sway them!

It will almost certainly be AL. rivalry with Mariners is just right there.

Fuck the Mariners. Perennial losers. Portland team or not, I’m not switching my lifetime Giants allegiance to a team just because it has Portland” across the front of a jersey. I’m not sure I’d even bother going if it was an AL team……

This is the first time I've ever heard of someone wanting a team here just in the hopes of seeing a team here 12 times a year. Lol.

If portland gets a team here it'll be an AL team. And just because you say fuck the Mariners doesn't mean the rivalry isn't gonna happen lol.

You don't have to root for the team in portland, but that is a very odd and unique take as to why you wouldn't like them lol. To each their own.
