I'm considering a new TV. I want something around 55'' to mount on a wall. Do I get a LCD or PLASMA? Any good deals out there? Any TV recomendations?

Right now I have a 62" JVC Rear Projection.

THANKS!

I've got a plasma and love it, except for the heat it puts out (true of all plasmas as far as I know). It's a Panasonic and (knock on wood) it's been great/no problems. Next time, I'm going to go the projector route (but I've got a home theater set up that's plenty dark and would be perfect for the space.)

In my opinion you get slightly better picture quality with a plasma. And last I checked plasma was still just a tad cheaper per inch. However I believe both price and picture quality have closed significantly between the two techs. Here's my recommendation. If you don't have a lot of potential for glare from nearby windows, get a plasma. If you do have windows, get an LCD as glare will not be an issue for daytime viewing. If you want, email me your budget and I can point you in the direction of what I'd consider some very good possibilities.

p.s. It's about time you upgraded that old beast!!!

Man, my father in law got a Samsung DLP a while back, and no joke, it might be the best monitor I've ever seen! Clean, crisp, no heat. Sports look unreal on it. I have an older Sony rear projection and when I step up to get something new, that the route I'm goin'! Good Luck!

this was seriously discussed like two months ago max.

I am LOVING the projector. Little did I know how much my wife would love it though. I had a gut feeling she would really enjoy it, even though she was hesitant, but man, she absolutely loves having the PJ. And the price is soooo right. Projector, screen, cables, mount came to about 1200 total. 106" of tv. I did go with a 720P projector to start. Wanted to make sure it would work, before I got too crazy. I wouldn't hesitate to suggest projection to anyone honestly.

If LCD uses less energy, then I'm sure that is what my wife will vote for. She's big on getting energy efficient appliances etc.

How long before HCP makes a joke about my wifes energy efficient vibrator? HA HA!

My former roommate has a LCD Sony television that cost more than twice as much as my Samsung DLP and the picture on the DLP is much better (even he will admit it). Here is an 82 in. Television for $3,999

I like a nice picture, but I'm not one of those guys that has a good eye for it. We have a cheap 47'' LCD 1080p Vizio from Costco in our bedroom and the picture on that is decent to me. Not the best for sports, but I dont watch much sports up in the bedroom.

Your wife and I do! And yes, I was about to crack on her solar powered vibrator.

Anyone have an LED flat screen? What I've seen in the store looks pretty sharp. They are expensive and I guess it's probably not wise to buy a first-run of a new technology but they are pretty cool. Very energy efficient and slim, too.

Heres some articles if you feel like reading.

Power Consumption is another comparison of interest to consumers. LCD TVs typically spec lower for power consumption than an equivalent size plasma. Projector power consumption varies more from unit to unit, with brighter conference room projectors requiring more power than smaller portable projectors. In November of 2008, new Energy Star ratings will be upgraded from 1998 standards. Many people are not aware that TVs go into a "stand by mode" rather than turning off completely. In this mode, energy is still being drawn. New standards will include power consumption in stand-by modes for a more accurate measure of energy efficiency.

It's all about the hertz of the tv. The refresh rate if you will. If you get a plasma make sure you get a 600 hertz over the 480 hertz. If you get an LCD then make sure you get 120 hertz over the 60 hertz.

As for the two technologies, I would go LCD. Plasma will start to get dimmer over time, and plasma tv's reflect light a lot more than LCD sets. I have both, and a projector in my media room and the regular 60'' tv's are both fine. But I can totally see the difference between the old flat screens I gave to the kids, and the new ones.

If you have the room for it, I highy recomend getting a projector. Mine goes from 60" to about 200" and is wonderful for viewing anything. It's great for gaming as well.

In order for a projector to look good, doesnt the room have to be pretty dark?

We have a large window in our living room so there is lots of light in the room during the day.

I just got a LCD 1080P 120hz... not even the best brand but it is amazing.

It should. If you have a large window that sheds light, you have answered your own question. LCD tv's don't have near the glare that plasma's do. Just make sure you buy a 120 hertz.

Samsung is what I would have bought if I had the extra $$$ shooter... they are nice.

^ I have a couple of Samsung LCD's and they are great. I don't think you can go wrong with Sharp or Samsung as long as you try and buy at least the mid-range model.
