Team Obama Regulates Goat Herders' Workplaces

The Obama administration is setting new workplace regulations to assist foreign workers who fill goat herding positions in the U.S. , including employee-paid cell phones and comfy beds.

These new special procedures issued by the Labor Department must be followed by employers who want to hire temporary agricultural foreign workers to perform sheep herding or goat herding activities. It describes strict rules for sleeping quarters, lighting, food storage, bathing, laundry, cooking and new rules for the counters where food is prepared.

“A separate sleeping unit shall be provided for each person, except in a family arrangement,” says the rules signed by Jane Oates, assistant secretary for employment and training administration at the Labor Department.

“Such a unit shall include a comfortable bed, cot or bunk, with a clean mattress,” the rules state.

Diane Katz, a research fellow in regulatory policy at The Heritage Foundation, unearthed the policy in the "Federal Register," the massive daily journal of proposed regulations that Washington bureaucrats publish every day.

Under the Obama Administration, the nanny state has imposed 75 new major regulations with annual costs of $38 billion.

“This captures what is wrong with government,” Katz said. “I could not have made this up.”

There are 2 ways to decrease illegal immigration.

1) The stupid police state method. Bust 'em and when they return, send 'em back again.

2) Increase the costs to farmers by requiring they spend as much on Mexican helpers as on native whities. That's what's being done. It's the intelligent way to give jobs back to the honkies instead of the police state way.

It's not particularly Obama. It's the enthusiasm of all the people he hired who have the power to regulate on even this type of trivial private sector activity.

You left out another option (the best one, in my opinion): Fine farmers and any other businesses that hire illegals--and reserve the right to shut them down if they do. That would stop the problem almost immediately.

That was what I said till I read this thread and realized Obama's wisdom on this, a 3rd method I hadn't thought of.

I've told the story before of how I did the accounting for a manufacturer in the Mexican Watts, a couple miles south of Los Angeles' Watts. Trucks shipped nationally to K-Mart and all the big outlets. Out of 50 employees I was the only one who spoke English except the owner. She had me pay them piece rate, which is illegal--you're supposed to pay them the higher of minimum wage or piece rate. I even created a spreadsheet to do it and showed her proudly (computer spreadsheets were pretty new), but she nixed it . She said she had their green card documentation in her file, but I never saw it. They had a nonunion strike for an hour while I was there. They just got mad about something.

The point is, within a 10-mile radius there were hundreds, maybe thousands, of such businesses. It was no secret. Politicians, police, and media winked at it. So method #1 will never work. Even after you export them back to Mexico, the employment available here is a magnet and they return. You have to stop the employment itself.

The argument that prevails among the powers that be is that this system (cheap illegal labor holding down costs so we beat Europe at exports) makes the US economy much stronger. That's why it's not going to be stopped.

well, we could kick out illegals, and then lower the minimum wage, and then we could be a third world country, yay

or we could kick out all the illegals, keep the minimum wage, and watch a million small companies crumble

or we could kick out all the illegals, make it harder for other countries to ship their cheap plastic crap here, and actually start making things again
