:sigh:

President Obama is putting plans in motion to give the Commerce Department authority to create an Internet ID for all Americans, a White House official told CNET.com.

White House Cybersecurity Coordinator Howard Schmidt told the website it is "the absolute perfect spot in the U.S. government" to centralize efforts toward creating an "identity ecosystem" for the Internet.

The National Strategy for Trusted Identities in Cyberspace is currently being drafted by the Obama administration and will be released by the president in a few months.

"We are not talking about a national ID card. We are not talking about a government-controlled system. What we are talking about is enhancing online security and privacy, and reducing and perhaps even eliminating the need to memorize a dozen passwords, through creation and use of more trusted digital identities," Commerce Secretary Gary Locke said at an event Friday at the Stanford Institute for Economic Policy Research, according to CNET.com.

Locke added that the Commerce Department will be setting up a national program office to work on this project.

The move has raised eyebrows about privacy issues.

"The government cannot create that identity infrastructure," Jim Dempsey of the Center for Democracy and Technology told the website. "If I tried to, I wouldn't be trusted."

Schmidt stresses that anonymity will remain on the Internet, saying there's no chance that "a centralized database will emerge."

Why, of course not. Just trust us. We're your government! Now kindly get in line and fill out your access form for the internet. It will take 2-4 weeks for approval.

I understand the logic. But I also understand the logic behind a lot of things i don't like. I hate having to remember 8 billion passwords, but Im not sure one single identity is the way to go. Esp if it's Government mandated/created/controlled/whatever.

In some cases, it could be easier, but I don't like what it opens us up to.

Plus, what do I do if I want to create a fake email account, so I can secretly stalk a girl I like?

er..I mean, I fucked HCP's wife!

its too easy to fake to get this actually put into place. zero chance of this happening. they can try, but won't happen.

It's not easy to fake if you register people by ID, and criminalize falsifying the info with a felony.

It's not like these are anonymous "White House sources" talking about this. Both the Commerce Head and the Cybersecurity Head are obviously working on this. Those are two Cabinet members who are trying to figure out how to get this in front of Obama.

I wonder if Obama will mention this during the State of the Union. Seems odd that they would go to the media with this without trying to spin it as something positive.

do you know how easy it is to steal an identity? the government is too stupid to be able to implement this. maybe if they link it to you SSN and you're required to verify it with a government login when you surf but its too convoluted of an idea to actually do it. the easiest way for them to do this is to just buy Facebook, then verify everyone's account...that's not easy to do.

The only reason for doing this is to know who to roundup when MARIS61 or Denny Crane pops off about the government, and to round up their bank accounts and their associates...All tied up in one little number.

As for the supposed inability to remember a few passwords being an issue worth restricting Freedom of Speech over...

I don't like it. Sounds too much like Big Brother.

There are single sign-on initiatives already in place. The private sector is doing just fine, thank you very much.

Imagine letting the government know what sites you visit, when you sign on, what you buy, etc. I mean they might be able to do that now, but why make it any easier to track EVERYONE?

He's giving many democrats what they asked for: more and larger government, more spending, more class warfare.

Love the class warfare argument when all data suggests that it's less a war and more a massacre coming from the other side.

That is the one thing I really think Obama has misstepped on. This whole idea of creating class warfare. Setting people against each other. It's a dispicable policy and the left should be ashamed for doing so.

should the right be proud for even more aggressively doing the exact same thing?

Thank you for proving my point. Obama has succeeded in your case.

I didn't prove your point. This class massacre preceded Obama by decades.

Yes, Obama is responsible for this. He started it.

Obama has tried to turn the debt and deficit issue into a debate about raising taxes on the "rich" instead of a debate on cutting spending. That is irresponsible and class warfare.

Please tell us how much the tax rate on the top 5% earners in the US would have to increase to cover the current federal deficit.

So Reagan and Bush aren't culpable when they drastically increase government spending while at the same time cut taxes for the "elite"? Long-term or short-term that is direct class warfare against the most marginalized people of this country. And when Obama speaks out for some sort of restoration of previous values, he is accused of class warfare?

I always like equal tax for all classes. I mean you would think a party that boasts "equality" would be all for it. Why not tax all income at the same rate? It's easy and I bet we get more money from it.

This is such a drama-queen response.

How is cutting taxes for one person a direct assault on another person? Oh, you're one of those "the pie is always going to be the same because we don't want to try to increase the size of the pie" people.

And when Obama speaks out for some sort of restoration of previous values, he is accused of class warfare?

He's more concerned about discussing class warfare than actually solving the debt and deficit issue.

Take another look at my post, especially the part you conveniently deleted....
