GALESBURG, Ill. — In a week when he tried to focus attention on the struggles of the middle class, President Obama said in an interview that he was worried that years of widening income inequality and the lingering effects of the financial crisis had frayed the country’s social fabric and undermined Americans’ belief in opportunity.

Upward mobility, Mr. Obama said in a 40-minute interview with The New York Times, “was part and parcel of who we were as Americans.”

“And that’s what’s been eroding over the last 20, 30 years, well before the financial crisis,” he added.

“If we don’t do anything, then growth will be slower than it should be. Unemployment will not go down as fast as it should. Income inequality will continue to rise,” he said. “That’s not a future that we should accept.”

A few days after the acquittal in the Trayvon Martin case prompted him to speak about being a black man in America, Mr. Obama said the country’s struggle over race would not be eased until the political process in Washington began addressing the fear of many people that financial stability is unattainable.

“Racial tensions won’t get better; they may get worse, because people will feel as if they’ve got to compete with some other group to get scraps from a shrinking pot,” Mr. Obama said. “If the economy is growing, everybody feels invested. Everybody feels as if we’re rolling in the same direction.”

Mr. Obama, who this fall will choose a new chairman of the Federal Reserve to share economic stewardship, expressed confidence that the trends could be reversed with the right policies.

The economy is “far stronger” than four years ago, he said, yet many people who write to him still do not feel secure about their future, even as their current situation recovers.

“That’s what people sense,” he said. “That’s why people are anxious. That’s why people are frustrated.”...........

Well, Mr. President, if your economic policies weren't such an epic fail the middle class just might be getting bigger.

um, the middle class has been getting smaller long before his 'economic policies' (which conservatives like to point out he hasn't done anything at the same time) were implemented.

To act like he's the reason there is a big income gap (which IS fraying the US social fabric) is just parroting the crap you hear on the tv or radio.

To act like he cares that there is an income gap is laughable. He accepts as much Wall Street/1% money as any politician in history. It takes a certain amount of cognitive dissonance to still believe a word that this guy utters.

Well he's given Wall Street bankers more money than anyone through fed policy!

True. But the President had made it a lot worse at a time he could have made it a lot better. He had overwhelming majorities in both houses and no cloture. The result? The worst 6 month period in the nation's history.

Epic fail.

That sounds good, but there was a study showing most of the people moving out of the middle class are moving upward, not downward. http://www.aei-ideas.org/2013/07/ye...ower-class-theyve-risen-into-the-upper-class/

The bigger issue is that his policies focus on equality first and growth second, if at all. It's no surprise with equality everyone is becoming equally miserable.

My signature us scary. Very, very scary.

Democrats aren't and never have been lock step voters like the Republicans especially now when many are completely beholden to the same special interest $$$. I find it pretty hilarious when this idiotic revisionist argument is made as it counts Joe Liberman among the many wild offshoots supposedly in Obama's pocket. And of course those awful 6 months were the result of past seeds sown (W) just as any period is more reflective of the policies of the time leading up to it then those being instituted.

Epic fail indeed

You don't actually believe this, do you? It is mostly gibberish, but from what I understand, you're saying that Democrats don't vote as a group?

Say what you want to defend liberalism and democrats, but that wasn't my point in the least.

Let me try again and try to read it without lefty (or righty) glasses on....

The country was in a perilous position and at that time was salvagable and a new President had overwhelming majorities in Congress to do any thing he wanted to completely unabated by the other party. Zero opposition in Congress. Whatever he felt it would take to fix the debt and deficiet was his to do.

The result?

In 6 months he added more to the debt and deficiet than several total adminstrations before him and put the final nail in our coffin on the path to national insolvency. It is now unstoppable and the only question is what will it look like.

Now, you may see that as some sort of a perverse victory for the coutry, but I sure don't.

You know what, I'm on board. I say fuck it. Let's cut all of the federal aid money. See how long those legions of right wing voters stay with the the right wing. Preach all you want, but the vast majority of federal aid money goes to red states.

59 democrats and 1 liberal republican from Massachusetts were able to pass one of the least popular bits of legislation in recent history.

I don't know how you can revise that otherwise.

Capitalism's logical conclusion is a true monopoly. Income disparity is just one of the steps to the glorious future. Everyone should be grateful.

Socialism's logical conclusion is tyranny.

My signature us scary. Very, very scary.

No no no. Very predictable. What is very scary is the number of voters that vote for this predictable disaster. That is truly scary! Then they did it again! Holy shit man, we are in trouble.

Well, Mr. President, if your economic policies weren't such an epic fail the middle class just might be getting bigger.

What are these policies of which you speak? What were Bush's?

You don't actually believe this, do you? It is mostly gibberish, but from what I understand, you're saying that Democrats don't vote as a group?

Of all the dumb posts you've ever written, this takes the cake. Yes, he said that all 60 Democrats don't vote in lockstep the way the robotic Republican monolith does. Duh. Is that difficult for you? Will Rogers said, "I don't belong to an organized political party. I'm a Democrat." It's as hard to herd freethinkers as it is cats. Republicans are instinctually easily regimented.

This is one the funniest posts I have read in here! Great job, and repped!

instant classic! "It's as hard to herd freethinkers as it is cats"
