This morning, I was listening, like with one ear to a repeat of several of the most recent Presidents, give parts of their inaugural address. The why had something to do with Trump coming to that point. When it got to Obama, I came up with a thought that I had not had before.

Obama seems to give some of his addresses in a cadence that is patterned off Martin Luther King's style. King had a definite cadences to his speaking, but never aggressive in tone. I think it is obvious King patterned his style after Mahatma Gandhi, the original of passive nonviolent resistance. Always speaking truth evenly and never aggressively. So it was with King in the style he took on in his mission, which was not all that different than Gandhi's.

What is Obama doing when he takes on the same identifiable cadence but mixes in a rather assertive even aggressive tone to his delivery? What is the underlying message in this deliver? To whom?

I apologize to those that may not remember hearing King or Gandhi, but perhaps some do.

I think Obama is just a great speaker...he uses dynamics and pauses in much the same way as King did but to me Ghandi was sort of a giggler...not a great speaker...more of a low key voice of reason....King had Southern Baptist preacher all over his style. To me King was more Mahalia Jackson and Obama is more Morgan Freeman

I am surprised you didn't pick up the similarities. Tone and cadence for sure, even dripping with the southern Baptist minister. Did you ever read the Bhagavad Gita? It seemed to me
like King often pickup from there in his addresses.

I did read that long ago.....and Ghandi and King were very similar in their msg....very inclusive and humble. no doubt they both had an effect on any leader that wanted to reach out and bring people together

MarAzul - I definitely agree. I have always thought of the cadence not so much as an MLK thing as a black church kind of thing. Now, you may be right, that it is more King than a general cultural way of speaking in that community. I have heard Gandhi many times and never made any connection with a similarity between him and King, or Obama for that matter, but it makes sense. I do think Obama patterns himself in that style.

I will have to go listen now.

Moving forward we'll have to define a great Twitter style. Trump doesn't seem to have that going good but I don't often read tweets.

I think I've said that I said to myself that I would vote for Obama after the first time I saw him speak on tv. It was during the Democratic National Convention four years before he ran.

I never dreamed that Marzul sits around all day listening to Gandhi speeches. Wow, he's right! Gandhi sounds just like Martin Luther King!

just listened to the speech jlprk linked and it is strikingly similar in phrasing...I can see the connection now....I remembered seeing documentary footage of him bobbing his head while spinning cloth and being pretty low key....the speech here is much more dynamic and compelling to listen to

Did you ever read the Bhagavad Gita?
I read Lao Tsu....Tao Te Ching....that's where I go for my introspective reading most of the time...also probably my favorite is The New Dictionary of Thoughts...great book to just randomly open for treasures

err, you're losing focus.

Ha! Well to be honest, I never did. But he was on the radio and movie news enough in my younger days, that I did get to hear him.
By the time King started making his rounds, I clearly recognized the style and associated the two.

Sold it....a 2003...good little car for a Ford
Fucking A. Mine drives 1000000 times better than a 1600 dollar car has any business driving.

I hope the guy I bought it from doesn't sell too many cars that he's worked on. He clearly doesn't know how important properly torqued bolts are.

But, it worked out for me.

It was the second car I bought for my son when his Honda got flooded in Corvalis, his high school car....I loved to drive it...great suspension..great mileage..he bought an SUV so he can get to Bend often and snowboard or fish...he misses the mileage on that car
