It's nice to know that the taxpayers in the USA not only gave these homophobes and bigots a state dinner, but also that Obama only passingly brought up human rights, be they for women or gays in Africa, in his speech to these "leaders" as the dined on Waygu beef and listened to Lionel Ritchie perfrom. He should have scolded these religious kooks and their backward, and often lethal, way of dealing with minority demographic groups in their own country.

This country is bonkers.

President Barack Obama drew the diplomatic line somewhere at the first ever U.S-Africa summit at the White House this week by not inviting Zimbabwe’s brutal dictator Robert Mugabe.

But the guest list still included several other African leaders with only slightly better human rights records.

The White House promoted the summit as the largest-ever gathering of African leaders in the United States, with more than 50 countries represented.

The red carpet was rolled out for Equatorial Guinea's Teodoro Obiang Nguema Mbasogo, who shot or jailed virtually all his political opponents, Gambia’s Yahya Jammeh, who threatened to ‘cut off the head’ of any homosexuals in the country and for Cameroon’s Paul Biya, who has the dubious honor of ranking 19th on author David Wallechinsky's 2006 list of the world's 20 worst living dictators.

Many of the leaders were later photographed in the White House, posing for individual portraits with Obama and the First Lady.

The President's opening speech avoided the prickly issues of homophobia and torture and instead sought out similarities between the two continents.
He opened with: ‘I stand before you as the president of the United States, a proud American. I also stand before you as the son of a man from Africa’.

Before going on to say: ‘Our faith traditions remind us of the inherent dignity of every human being and that our work as nations must be rooted in empathy and compassion for each other, as brothers and as sisters.’

Here we run the rule over nine of the most controversial leaders who enjoyed the lavish affair.

More successful foreign policy on display.....laughable.

I expect that the posters on this board who complain about homophobes and misogynists on a message board won't say a negative word about the President of the USA hosting African leaders who literally make homosexuals hide for fear of being outed, and keep women back in the dark ages.

Every president has to engage with the wackjob leaders in those regions. Why wouldn't you want to initially open dialogue with leaders in trouble spots in the middle east or africa or any part of the globe? Not to downplay the tragedy in those regions but I don't get the implications concerning a diplomatic dinner with all the bad guys at the same table.

You don't have to invite them to the white house. Have your flunkies talk to their flunkies on the phone.

Sure, but you don't invite them to a state dinner at the White House funded by taxpayers where you gloss over their human rights abuses, and then have Lionel Ritchie give a concert as everybody dances.

When Obama had Israel's PM at the White House, he made him sit and wait until he finished dinner with Michelle and the girls. Wake the fuck up, America.

I'm guessing the Dalai Lama didn't get a gourmet meal when he visited Obama in the White House.

Aw, ease up! He is just doing what he is capable of doing. You can't face hard stuff everyday.

Obama has had more Saudi guests at the White House than W. Bush did. Don't tell the moronic left, though.

Yeah, I figured the photos of Obama bowing to the Saudi leader, and smiling like a goof with him while shaking his hand, would be the end of this thread.

Post more shit after 5pm, so I don't have a chance to respond. I don't post much at home.

When we have a president who doesn't suck up to the Saudis let me know.

The more things "change", the more they stay the same

So it's ok if they are Chinese, Central or South American, etc...just not the Africans? Glossing over human rights violations is the only way to talk to human rights violators. We could just go to war with all of them but then there's that taxpayer money issue again? I think having them to dinner is the better option

Obama should answer disrespect like the great Russian Leader, VLADMIR "My country 'tis of thee" Putin. Why can't we have a Christian nation like Russia?!

I don't think the Dalai Lama, as a Buddhist who rejects attachment to material things, wanted a gourmet meal. But I can't speak for him, so who knows.

yeah, the president of democratic Taiwan hasn't been allowed in the White House either, those humanitarian Chinese slammed the door on that country during the Carter years when China insisted we vote them out of the UN
