Rand Paul, my favorite candidate in 2016, just went against my position. He wants to go to war against IS.

Now IS is a bad bunch, and they have declared they are at war with us. I wish them nothing good.
But I do not think we need to spend blood in the sand of that part of the world just yet.
There are several peoples that want the IS defeated. We should let them do it, even help by sending arms to them, like the Kurds.

There are perhaps 200 million "Radical" Islamist in the world of several factions, none of which will ever be our friends. They are some where around one billion other followers of Islam in the world from which the Radicals replenish their ranks. They don't do much to discourage the radicals or Jihadist, except frown on them occasionally. But they do replenish their ranks with their spawn.

Just because they behead a journalist or two and talk bad about us daily, does not mean we need to send young men and women to battle these scum. The smart play is to help those that will. We can cancel the passports of the Americans that join them and be prepared to shoot down planes approaching without the proper recongnition and make sure we close the US boarders to the unknowns.

We are in fact at War with IS and maybe another half dozen other Islamic organization but how we fight that should be more strategic. We can't fight one group and win anything as long as these groups spring from the culture of Islam and they can hardly tolerate it themselves until we step in and become their common enemy. Better to help others that are willing to step forward and gain the attention.

This state of War is not new with these people. Way back at the beginning of this nation, when the American merchant fleet lost the protection of the British Navy, we learned we were at war with them. John Adam, the ambassador Britain meet with the Tripoli ambassador to Britain to try and find away to secure right of passage for American ships. The ambassador told Adams there would be no agreement, they were at war with the United States. Adams said he knew nothing of this war. The gentleman from Tripoli just said, you are a Christian nation without protection.

It took awhile but when Jefferson became President, Congress authorized six frigates be built for the New United States Navy. Their role was to put the Corsairs out of action, but I don't think we ever won the war, and I don't think they every said it was over. By the way, they have 22 new commercial airliner jets now they just took control of in Libya. We best keep and eye open for where they might be headed, but that doesn't take grunts in the sand.

IS just threatened Putin and Russia.

Funny how no Libertarian candidate can ever find the stones to practice the core Libertarian principle of non-meddling with foreign powers.

Without that, they're just the Republican party.

It'll be interesting to see how Russia/Putin responds to this "threat". I think their far more likely to be less discriminating when it comes to their response, IF they respond.

Not that I think they will invade/attack ISIS, but if they did they'd be far more willing to go be overly aggressive (compared to a hypothetical US attack).

I am not in favor of a war, but it's interesting that ISIS seems to be wanting to bring a knife fight (outdated planes/jets, limited military supplies) to a gun fight (better trained pilots, newer planes/jets, and a far greater supply of weapons/jets/planes/tanks, etc).

I understand their greater point (stay out of their business), and to a degree I agree. I believe that we've done enough pot stirring over there. But I also understand why the response from the US could be aggressive and a show of might.
