Am I missing the thread? Why hasn't this been mentioned yet?!

The most powerful twister in recorded history of this planet.

Because it's pretty depressing actually.

It was the most powerful? I thought it was an EF-4? Of course, it was huge and stayed on the ground for a while.

I can't find the link now but the weather guy in OKC talked about this with an expert this morning. It's an F5 now and "the most powerful tornado in recorded history."

Thanks everyone for the update. There was a Blazer poster who used to post on O-Live named "Wxman". He used to chase tornadoes (the "Wx" is for "weather"). I wanted to get his opinion on this storm, and found out he passed 16 months ago. He educated me tremendously about tornadoes and was a great Blazer fan.

RIP, Wxman.

This article lists various tornado records. The most extreme tornado in recorded history was the Tri-State Tornado, which roared through parts of Missouri, Illinois, and Indiana on March 18, 1925. It was likely an F5, though tornadoes were not ranked on any scale in that era. It holds records for longest path length at 352 km (219 mi), longest duration at about 3.5 hours, and fastest forward speed for a significant tornado at 117 km/h (73 mph) anywhere on Earth. In addition, it is the deadliest single tornado in United States history (695 dead).[1] It was also the second costliest tornado in history at the time, but has been surpassed by several others non-normalized. When costs are normalized for wealth and inflation, it still ranks third today.

I remember him. RIP!

wow, didn't know that either. Met him at the first KP M&G.

"Several meteorologists contacted by The Associated Press used real time measurements to calculate the energy released during the storm's life span of almost an hour. Their estimates ranged from 8 times to more than 600 times the power of the Hiroshima bomb with more experts at the high end"

Global warming.

In before Al Gore.

Can't wait for the Westboro Baptist church of mental midgets to explain why god destroyed this town AGAIN.

Hiroshima death toll - 118,000

OKC tornado death toll - 24

Oklahoma tornado was a monster, but it wasn't a record-breaker

I'll say it because no one else will. Because they stole the Supersonics. Or maybe because they have Durant and we used to have Oden's dong.

I just have a general apathy for all things OKC because of these factors. Perhaps other blazers fans do to, thus the lack of mention or discussion.

or maybe there's nothing to discuss. Its a natural disaster, it sucks that it happens and what can we post about?

We're in the process of renovating our house. As part of it, we've excavated an additional 800+ feet of our basement for storage, a mechanical room and adding onto our family room.

Tonight, my wife came to me and told me as part of our renovation, she wants to have our structural engineer design a tornado shelter in a corner of our new storage room. Her decision is a direct result of what happened in Moore.

Does anyone understand why those schools didn't have a shelter? It seems obvious that they should have one given location, but am I missing something?

I guess it's along similar lines, but when I heard about the schools, my thought was they spent so much money building an arena before a team was even there and gave Bennett a sweetheart deal with big time public financing...but they don't have shelters in the schools? I haven't lived there and maybe there are reasons for it that are outside my grasp, but it seems nuts.

Obviously, no one can plan for all possible disasters, but this one seems pretty predictable. Or am I just missing something?

#richcrackaproblems

Exactly. We're lucky to be able to afford such a luxury. I tried to tell my wife instead of a shelter, I should spend my money like D-Miles...

It was an older school. The new schools (from the 1980s on) evidently have tornado shelters.

One suggestion I heard which I think makes enormous sense is to treat days with high risks of tornadoes like snow days.

Still seems like they could build a shelter without needing to do major renovations to the whole school. In the northwest, we're due for a pretty big earthquake in the next hundred years. I know that schools and buildings are not designed to handle the worst quake, which is scary. The problem is that the retrofitting buildings to withstand a 9.0 earthquate is difficult and crazy expensive. Having a tornado shelter at each school doesn't seem like it would be that difficult or expensive, but I'm admittedly pretty ignorant about what it would involve.

I think after this incident, you'll see exactly such legislation proposed for schools in Tornado Alley.

Listening to the "storm chasers" on CNN. Those guys are such dip shits.
