One of deepest drafts recently and we don't get to pick? (1 Viewer)

Former Portland Trail Blazers general manager Neil Olshey made the trade with Chicago in 2021 that included a lottery-protected first-round pick, which was protected through 2028. The trade was for forward Larry Nance Jr.
  • Trade Details: The August 2021 three-team deal sent Derrick Jones Jr. and the protected first-round pick to Chicago, Larry Nance Jr. to Portland, and Lauri Markkanen to Cleveland.
  • Pick Status: The pick was lottery-protected (1-14) through 2028, meaning it would only convey if Portland made the playoffs. If it did not convey by 2028, it would become a 2028 second-round pick.
  • Conveyance: Following years of missing the playoffs, Portland finally conveyed this pick to Chicago in 2026 after making the postseason.

Playing 5 games in the playoffs was worth it to some fans who don't have the teams best interest at heart and don't see the bigger picture.

I was smart though, and knew it was fucking stupid.

I'm curious, do people think Dundon did this on purpose, meaning making the playoffs rather than getting a draft pick that might have a high salary attached and to make a few extra bucks from the playoffs? I really can't wrap my head around being so fucking dumb as to have not tanked. I enjoyed the high of the Phoenix win, but it was predictably (I and many others predicted it) a waste of time. Hopefully, our pick stays where it is, if it goes top 3...

GMs build teams to tank. Players and coaches don't tank. You do not want players or coaches throwing games. Our roster didn't suck as much as other teams' did and Splitter did his best to keep his job.

And an owner can't make players throw games. If they did that would be cheating.

Cuban told his team to tank games and it got them Luka. Of course he got fined.

Our team set a goal at the beginning of the season to make the playoffs and they did it. Do I think the goal was wise? Not really. Do I think it helps the rebuild to have Jrue basically will us into the playoff? Nope. Jerami was a major contributor as well and I don't think that helps the rebuild either.

Do I wish we were in this draft with a lotto pick? Yeah I do. I hope we trade into it and maybe we will. I sincerely hope we don't go old this off season, just to have another rebuild in a few years.

All of that said I started this post referencing the goal our players and coaches set out to achieve at the beginning of the season and they achieved it and when they did I was happy for them. That game against the Suns was a lot of fun and I enjoyed it in the moment even though it meant losing this year's pick.

I’m more interested in who gets fired and who we trade for. I read something today on X that put all the little tidbits about the supposed trade together and they came up with Trey Murphy. I really hope we didn’t turn that down.

I am ( Layne ) -- I like Trey but is he really a needle mover maybe with another move or two but not sure this team would have been that better off

Cronin declared at the end of season q&a that Tom is exploring buying into the lottery. It could be Murray + Cash Considerations for a pick. Mike Schmitz must have a list, and if a guy they are high on is available. We could still be part of the draft

You send your best player out of the country with a freak condition making it deadly for him to be physically active. So he can play pickup soccer with local kids.

You do this kind of thing until you have enough talent to compete for championships every year.

And when the NBA gets mad at you for it you just console yourself with the championship trophies you collect as a result.

I thought he said they’ve talked about buying into the draft, not the lottery. 3 million is not going to get you a lottery pick, IMO

Glad we freed up our picks and guaranteed the Bucks swaps. I'd rather have a chance at top 3 to get a Tatum or Brown than whoever at pick #15

Couple entertaining playoff games was just a bonus.
This is where I am. I’m interested to see what is done on coaching front and offseason moves. This team needs some reliable 3 point shooting. Players got a taste of playoffs. They should be frustrated at the way it ended and be motivated to build on it for next season.

I've read a couple of blogs basically saying that the draft is really solid 1-4, by the time you get past 8 or 9 it's not a great draft anymore
“Couple of blogs”….. that writer could have been the JinxSpeed of their forum. Can you imagine somebody reading HIS posts on here and then using that collection of keyboard pounds as Blazers inside info!!??

Murray and cash isn't getting the 31st pick in the 2nd round ... Let alone a lottery pick.

That's like saying we're exploring trading for Jokic and willing to send out Yang.

I meant to say draft. that's what cronin said. I don't think lottery picks are commonly sold for cash anyway

cash + 2028 Orlando pick + a 2nd or two might be enough to get a pick in the 20's of the 2026 draft. Might not be enough either

people ought to break out the jumbo sized salt grains before they accept as fact the things Cronin was riffing on about Dundon in that interview. The hypothetical over-the-tax-line-for-youngish-star trade, and the 2026 lottery. Those seem real convenient fantasy trades designed to combat against the cheapskate narrative that has developed around Dundon. After a decade of Olshey, and hearing more than a dozen times that Portland was very very close, oh so close, to getting another star in secret trade talks, I'm extremely skeptical about the Blazer front office spinning stories about trades that didn't happen...but could have

You must have completely missed how he said a player and cash. Not just cash???
which players do the Blazers have tat would be worth a 1st round pick?

Kris Marray isn't; Sissoko and Yang aren't. Timelord and Thybulle are free agents. Nobody is sending a 1st for Grant; and probably the same is true for Jrue. Deni-Camara-Clingan-Dame are off-limits. That leaves Sharpe and Scoot. Currently Sharpe is in that CBA limbo between his rookie scale and 2nd contract; and that 2nd contract is 4-years/90M. And Sharpe's value has cratered lately. So then Scoot and cash for a 2026 1st. But while Scoot started the playoff with a bang over the first 2 games, he barely whimpered over the last 2. I guess look at teams in that late teens early 20's of the draft that might need a tweener guard/PG

if Cronin is able to get this done, which I doubt, I'd be pretty confident it would be a pick in the 20's somehere. It might be part of a larger trade involving players and/or a future Blazer 1st

IMHO, some people are assigning too much credibility to Cronin's spin on fantasy trades

Whining over no pick and I was the one hoping they would get eliminated so they could have a pick ( assets ) but in retrospect I have to say that while watching them self destruct in the playoffs sucked it was needed. Sometimes you have to hit rock bottom to rise up cause this put a light on players some of us were holding out hope for and saying just give them one more year etc etc.

Basically the whole roster cause it put a HUGE spotlight on players weaknesses and what they need to improve on or maybe made it more clear they just need to go.

I know for me it was Sharpe and maybe time to explore a trade for him.

I am not going to go into all the players cause I think that needs a topic on it's own like --

Who to keep and who needs to go this offseason -- thread

just because I think it's always worthwhile to shit on Olshey....

beside the idiotic 7 year encumbrance on the Blazer 1st's....it's worth remembering that it was a 3 team trade. Why is that worth remembering? It's because the Bulls got Derreck Jones and the Blazer pick. What did the Bulls trade? They traded Lauri Markkanen. But Olshey didn't want Markkanen; he thought Larry Nance was better so he brought Cleveland into the deal and they traded Nance for Markkanen

in other words, Olshey could have got Markkanen in that trade but he chose Nance.....fuggin idiot
