Which leads me to this question. Why are we as a society forcing the children of people dumb enough to not believe in modern medicine into life-lengthening treatments? Are we sure we want the offspring of such people becoming a part of society?

Human attributes tend to regress to the mean from one generation to the next. The child of two geniuses is overwhelmingly likely to be less intelligent than his/her parents. The child of two dummies is overwhelmingly likely to be smarter than his/her parents. That's why Hitler's attempts to create a "super race" by selective breeding was wrongheaded from a scientific perspective, in addition to moral issues.

So yeah, I'd rather the child survived even if the parents were dangerously stupid.

It was wrongheaded because anyone knows the best way to create a super race would be to take 5 white guys and have them each breed with one white, black, asian, mexican and jewish woman and then inbreed the shit out of the remainder. duh

That's nature, but nurture plays a role too.

Personally, I believe nurture plays a smaller role than is popularly imagined. At least, the part of "nurture" than involves the parenting. I think economic background and the environment the child grows up in makes a pretty big difference, but I think people overrate the role of parents in terms of the personality and mental/emotional attributes of the child. A very popular conception is that children are lumps of clay that parents mold, but I think parents by and large operate on the margins in terms of who the child is and becomes. Just my opinion.

That is, of course, barring hugely damaging things like abuse and that sort of thing. But that's the type of thing laws like this seek to prevent. My opinion is mostly based on parents operating within the standards of society.

Unfortunately, in this case the environment the kid grows up in is the crackpot church. I agree it isn't the parents alone - it's also the community they belong to.
