Sheriff's deputies in Douglas County arrested a father and his teenage son after the pair opened fire on a pickup truck that had accidentally crashed into the family's front yard in Roseburg.

Armed with a .22-caliber pistol and a .40-caliber Glock, Mike and Dillen Sanderson unloaded at least 10 rounds at the brown Chevy as it sped away from their Happy Valley home early Wednesday, according to cops and court records.

"The guy emptied a clip at me!" the distraught driver, Adam Smith, 29, later told a Douglas County Sheriff's deputy, a probable cause affidavit shows.

The wild scene began around 5:40 a.m. when Smith, who claimed to be exhausted from working two jobs, fell asleep behind the wheel of his pickup and rolled into the Sanderson front yard, knocking over a portion of a fence, court records show.

The disturbance was enough to stir Mike Sanderson, 50, from his living room couch, where he was watching television. When Sanderson saw a truck in his front yard, he told authorities, he grabbed his gun, a .22-caliber pistol, and rushed to the front porch.

Outside, the armed homeowner trained his weapon at Smith and yelled at him to cut the engine, according to the affidavit. The sight of a gun pointed at Smith was enough to spook the disoriented driver, who started screaming and stepped on the gas.

"I'm sorry! I'm sorry! I'm sorry! I'll fix your fence," Smith said he tried to tell Sanderson, who responded by shooting twice at Smith's truck tires, according to court documents.

Little did either man know that all of the commotion outside had woken up Mike Sanderson's 18-year-old son Dillen, who had been fast asleep in his room. Dillen Sanderson told authorities he found the household's .40-caliber Glock and bolted outside, the affidavit shows.

The teen then started shooting wildly at Smith and his pickup as it sped off, striking the rear window and several other places on the vehicle, records show. Mike Sanderson told deputies that his son fired approximately eight shots.

At least one of the bullets grazed his Smith's head, the driver told officials.

After the shootout, Mike Sanderson called 911. He and his son were arrested that evening and lodged in the Douglas County Jail on charges of attempted assault and unlawful use of a weapon. Mike Sanderson also faces a menacing charge in relation to the incident.

During his interview with deputies, Smith said he could still fix Sanderson's fence.

These guys are pieces of shit...... but why do they need to say it was a Glock? Do they need that wow factor? Was the .22 homemade? Did it not have a manufacturer that they could parade out there?

I very much doubt the Oregonian sent a reporter down there, I'm guessing this story was rewritten from a local account and that's where the weapon descriptions were introduced.

Wait, there's a second Happy Valley?

@MARIS61 wouldn't have missed. That truck grill would be hanging over his mantel before the sheriff got there.

Sheriff? :dunno:

The article shows a real bias in reporting what was clearly a hit and run by some methhead, at one point saying he shot "wildly" while confirming he was not only able to hit a speeding target over 50% of the time in the dark with a handgun but neatly grazed the fleeing criminal's head as a warning not to repeat the offense.

Darn neat shooting IMO.

Roseburg is fucked up. Trust me. I'm from the area and any currently having a sabbatical here.

I wouldnt shoot someone in that situation. Id just get the license plate and call police? Big difference between home invasion and hitting my fence.

Welcome to America

Look I understand protecting your property, but these guys were a bit overzealous.

Couple of fucking idiots. It's hard enough to defend your right to own firearms without halfwits trying to shoot anything that moves. Get these dumb fucks some slingshots or BB guns until they can pass a 3rd grade exam.

Later that day, police were able to identify and locate the driver of the vehicle.
...
Smith said he drove away and later ditched his truck near the boat ramp because the vehicle’s drivetrain was damaged from the crash and he assumed that the men who were shooting at him weren’t “done with him yet.”

He was shot at, his head grazed by a bullet, he assumed they would shoot at him again, he didn't report it to police.

They're your neighbors.

My neighbors have the Border Collie from hell...nobody will get within 50 yards of their front door without a trip to the emergency room....much more effective than an automatic weapon when someone hits your fence.

Because it promotes the idea that some guns are scarier than other guns, simply because of their name or what they look like.

You're parsing trivial things. Guns are already scary. The motherfucker probably really had a Glock so WTF? You're assuming that they said it to fit your narrative when really they could just be describing the exact same weapon that the boy grabbed. I'm more concerned about the innocent guy they shot at. Poor guy falls asleep at the wheel from working two jobs and ends up getting shot at. Who really gives a shit if they said Glock? That's a stupid thing to be mad about. There are bigger fish to fry.

Sooo take away their guns? :dunno:

Because that's exactly what's about to happen.

It was more of an off-the-cuff remark than anything. But yeah, if they get felonies then no more guns for them. Wouldn't hurt my feelings much. I wouldn't want someone to come after my guns, but I also don't pull them out and start shooting as a knee jerk reaction to whatever surprises life throws at me.

A lot of cops do exactly what these guys are getting arrested for and they're literally given a get out of jail free card.

I have 2 guns in my center console right now. Neither one scares me. But neither one is a glock so why be scared?

Define "a lot" in relative to the entire police force i'd wager to say "very few" is more accurate.
