Oregon State University is developing an online course centered on “social justice” that new students will soon berequired to take.

The course will debut as a pilot program during the fall term, which starts in late September, and the full roll-out will happen toward the beginning of winter term, which starts in January, a university official told The College Fix via email.

The new program “is intended to provide all students entering Oregon State University an orientation to concepts of diversity, inclusion, and social justice and help empower all OSU students to contribute to an inclusive university community,” campus documents state.

“Social justice” is largely a progressive phrase mainly used to tout left-leaning agendas such as environmentalism, socialism, feminism and gay rights. Oregon State would not be the first public university to mandate such a curriculum. At UMass Amherst, students are required to take two “social justice” classes to earn diploma, for example.

Asked how Oregon State defines social justice, Batista said that is also a work in progress.

As proposed, the course will aim to teach students that “systemic and local inequities exist and that we all play a role in creating an OSU community that resists and corrects injustice,” according to the university’s website. It will also explain “how to identify bias incidents and learn how to interrupt bias in in our daily lives.”

The university maintains a large Bias Response Team, consisting of seven high-ranking campus administrators who decide how to respond to reports of perceived harassment. Their responses might include “involvement of campus safety offices, providing access and referrals to campus resources, investigation of the incident, and coordinating a community response,” the team’s website states.

Definitely, OSU students should understand diversity and inclusion. OSU is a diverse campus made up of both white people and cows, and both groups should have mutual respect.

Bias Response Team? Isn't that what Uma Thurman's tv pilot was about in Pulp Fiction?

Wait, it was something else I think. Damn, getting old.

Awesome.... we need MORE SJWs running around online.

When and how is OSU going to address their major problem of professors pushing their bias on the students?

Or are all of the professors with biased agendas on the Bias Response Team?

We're going to have an entire generation of people like this

Shouldn't they be forced to take another class called "How To Be 75,000 in Debt and Live With Your Parents Till You're 30!" College is just big business and I hate it more every fucking day.
How is it just big business?

Also, kids with 75k in debt are stupid. If you stay at an in state college that is public like oregon state, tuition and books are like 2500/term.

College is a good thing, just dont be a history major. Major in a STEM field.

Ha, did both. The closest I got to a job in History/English was finding family crests and putting them on mugs and mouse pads.

I see a lot of grads taking low paying jobs, biding their time until they land one in their field. Trade school takes about 6 months to a year for most. You can earn a good living if you are a skilled tradesman. Got to be better than serving coffee. Seems to me that would make an arts major more feasible. 3/4 years in college, one in trade, never out of work or earning minimum wage.

Yeah i have no issues with trade schools. Electricians, pipefitters etc. Make a great living. My wife is a dental assistant, went to school for a year and makes $20/hour now.

I went to school and got bachelor degrees in accounting and marketing, graduated in 09 during a job recession and still was able to find work. Ill never be out of a job with my accounting degree. I told myself i wouldnt get a job in tax, but when those were the ones being offered i took it. The marketing degree....most of the job offers were for sales positions and i aint a salesman.

Because some of us CAN'T do STEM.

I suck at math and science is boring. Eventually there's going to be so many engineers that the market will be watered down and they won't make shit.

Or business. Or marketing. Or law. There are options. Point is--control spend and pick something worthwhile.

Maybe. A lot of those industries have a ton of baby boomers looking to retire soon.

Take tax preparers. Baby boomers dominate that industry. You go to continuing education seminars and there are a bunch of people in their 50's. Im also the youngest one at 30 attending. They will all retire in the next 5 to 10 years, and tax return prep will go up if the hole filled by the baby boomers isnt filled.

This should be a requirement for former OSU students too.
They already had ethnic studies classes as an elective people had to choose from. I almost minored in it and thought the classes were quite interesting. Easiest classes ever.

I'm waiting for the White Man Reform class. You get to stand up in front of everyone and they yell at you about how privileged and bigoted and sexist you are, and then tell you that your opinion doesn't matter because you're a straight white man. If you try to defend yourself, the timer resets and you start over.

Yo I went to my alma matter the other day, talked to some students they said it was $65k a year.

Just some peronal observations, that's all. Yes, college if its managed the right way, can be a good thing. But having come from a family filled of three generation of educators dedicated to higher learning, I have seen an epoch in the nature and value of it. I think teens nowadays should think outside the box. Gain hard skills anyway you can. Trade school, apprenticship, two year degree in a growing but unfamiliar industry. I like the phrase, "think outside the box." Since so few college graduates immediately in the field they've chosen, I think diversification is key as well.

Huh? This sounds exactly like just another day in the life of the twenty first century white male over a certain age.....

I am not sure how biased this source is in its description of the curriculum, but I have requirements for licensing to take equal justice continuing education. Regardless of your political beliefs, I can't see how this requirement is a bad thing. College is all about being introspective as to what you believe and why, your hopes and dreams for your future, and learning about other people's experiences. But, um okay, just use your SJW acronym and ridicule people who want to foster an environment that allows you to learn about other people's experiences, because I am sure that will totally solve some problem.

Bingo! You hit it right on the head. In today's world a four year college degree is highly overrated. As you stated, gain hard skills anyway you can, even if it's at a series of shit jobs for a period of time. If nothing else you'll gain skills that are good around the house. And community colleges are far and away the best educational bang for the buck out there. If nothing else, get a transferable two year degree and then finish up your bachelors. That goes a long way towards keeping the costs down. Most companies don't care where you went for the first two years (if they even bother to check). They only see a four year degree. And community colleges are full of two year programs in wide variety of professions, most of which are seriously hurting for good employees right now because too many kids coming out of high school are either too lazy and arrogant to "lower" themselves, or are too brainwashed about the actual value of a four year degree.....Baby Boomers are retiring in droves and plenty of good jobs are out there. It's all about keeping expectations realistic and attainable......

Hell Nate, you don't need a class when that shit happens on this forum! Rookie!

Says who?
Says someone who went to college and postgraduate school. If you don't think people should learn things and have new experiences when they go to college, then I don't know what to tell you.
