OT: Carmelo Has No-Trade Clause In $124M Deal With Knicks

Carmelo Anthony's contract with the New York Knicks is worth $124,064,681 over five seasons. Anthony also has a no-trade clause and a 15-percent trade kicker.

Anthony will earn the following amounts, according to Marc Stein:

Year 1: $22,458,401

Year 2: $22,875,000

Year 3: $24,559,380

Year 4: $26,243,760

Year 5: $27,928,140.

They'v got capspace next year to make some big moves but its had to see them getting the pieces to do anything more then go to the second round.

I'm amused seeing this after Phil Jackson took Anthony to task in the media, saying he should play for less to prove he's a team-oriented guy and implying that they weren't going to max him out because you can't build competitive teams around a max deal.

How about a max AND a no-trade clause?

Phil was right. It's not a max deal. Phil got him to take less to "help out the team".

Additionally, the trade kicker is just about meaningless. Melo's making juuuuuust about the maximum, and the salary + trade kicker can't go over the maximum. (Coon CBA FAQ #99)

Actually, looking at the numbers, he's making the max amount he can this year. Then, next year, his number is reduced from the $24,142,781 he could be making down to $22,875,000 ($1.267M savings off their cap next year). Then he isn't making the max 7.5% raises following that (7.3% the 2nd year, 6.86% third year, 6.3% 4th year).

So if he was traded tomorrow, he wouldn't get a dime of his trade kicker this year and less than 2% (of the 15% entitled) each year. So it's basically a 1.5% trade kicker
