Yea, I'm curious. Who wins in that deal? I guess time will tell if it happens.

Indiana, for sure. Murphy was an empty stat whore who played with zero effort last year. Filling a dire PG hole and trading away a malcontent is definitely a +.

Four NBA teams are on the verge of a five-player trade, two league sources said.

In the proposed deal, the Houston Rocketswill send Trevor Ariza to the New Orleans Hornets. The Hornets will send Darren Collison and James Posey to the Indiana Pacers. The Pacers will send Troy Murphy to the New Jersey Nets. And the Nets will send Courtney Lee to the Rockets.

According to the sources the Rockets, Hornets, Pacers and Nets are in advanced discussions on the deal and the principals involved are set. The teams were ironing out details, including Posey's trade kicker and possible cash payments.

If Ariza is all it takes for NO to dump Collison, I'm disappointed that we can't get something done.
 
Indiana and New Orleans are the clear winners, NO gets rid of Posey's old ass and replaces him with a very good wing defender who can go back to being a 4th option on offense where he's most comfortable and useful and Indiana finally gets a point guard which they desperately needed and sheds Murphy who apparently wanted out.

Houston does OK too by adding another shooter to put on the wing, then New Jersey gets a decent stretch four, but I don't see this as a win for either team necessarily.
 
Ariza has shown himself to be a pretty average player. I would have expected a lot more for a guy like Collison. Outside the fact that this trade eliminates any chance for them to trade away Paul, I don't consider NO a winner at all.

You think Ariza is the missing piece?

No way Chris Paul is placated (for more than a short time) by this move.
 
I look at several things on this trade:

1. Houston had too many players at the same position which were good. They need to make their lineup more balanced. Lee is a good defender which will give them versatility to line up size wise with their competition.

2. Ariza going to New Orleans will be just one of the moves New Orleans will try to make to keep Paul in town. He will fit well there, he just needed to go back to being a guy who was on the receiving end of passes instead of trying to make plays himself.

3. Collison going to Indiana would be a huge upgrade and solve a big problem for them.

4. The Loser? New Jersey. Troy Murphy blows ass.

Bayless and Lee (and Lowry, who they overpaid) are pretty similar, and iirc, Morey was very high on Rudy in the 07 draft. We could have potentially replaced Indiana/NJ if we threw in Joel.

Essentially:

Rudy/Bayless/Joel to Hou (given Joel's contract being paid mostly by insurance, HOU would have gotten a similar relief to their payroll)

Maybe. But who is to say that having another big on board isn't more important? I would also point out, that New Orleans also preferred to send Collison to the eastern conference, so they wouldn't have to face him much.

I wouldn't want Portland to do that deal. I don't put much value on Fernandez, but I value Bayless similarly to Collison and the Przybilla for Posey swap (essentially) is a significant value to New Orleans. For me, it would be either Bayless OR salary relief (plus some combination of Cunningham, Pendergraph, Babbitt, Williams). Not both. (Rudy can be a throw-in for either version.)

There's still time ... After all, Miller is potentially under contract for two more years (he's only an expiring contract if the team wants him to be), Bayless may not be ideal as the backup point guard but he's probably passable for fifteen minutes a night this coming year, Johnson might surprise people and turn into a credible rotation player (not right away). I want to see the team address the point guard spot as much as the next guy and despite the sense of urgency many of us feel surrounding the kludge of guards and the need to thin the roster or consolidate them into some kind of clear cut upgrade maybe there's something else out there?

It took me two years of hearing KP talking about how much he had to force himself to sit on his hands before I started to question whether he actually maybe wasn't all that capable of a deal maker (or maybe willing is a better word?). Similarly, Cho probably should get at least a couple of months on the job before we start to question his ability or willingness to make trades.

I have nothing to back this up but a gut feeling; I don't think we'll see a "big" deal consummated until around the trade deadline.

Not fair to bash Cho on this one. As I understand it, even tough the deal is done, he is still analyzing this trade to see how it can help us. Next week he sends it to Nate McMillan for approval, then the week of Aug. 22nd it goes to Larry Miller, and due to Paul Allen being on his yacht, it goes to him to sign off on in mid Sept.
