Haven't seen this here, from today's SF Chronicle

Nickey Maxwell Van Exel, the son of former NBA guard Nick Van Exel, went on trial in Dallas for capital murder in the shooting death of a friend.

Of course, guns don't kill people....

things that kill more people than guns:

car accidents
cigarettes
alcohol
otc drugs
prescription drugs
obesity
war
poverty
medical malpractice
manbearpig
etc
etc

This brings up a pet peeve of mine. You see cops take people away in hand cuffs when suspected of drinking and driving. (Even when innocent) But that's not my pet peeve.

The part that bugs me is you never see them handcuffing some soccer mom for texting while driving 70 mile an hour on a free way. Both are dangerous and both are done deliberately.

Anyway car accidents do kill a lot of people. More people than die in our military each year. But we do little to change it. Not sure they should even be considered accidents. Most of the time they are caused by the stupidity of one of the drivers.

very true, i heard the other day on the radio here, so 17 year old was talking on the phone and merging onto the highway, slammed into someone and knocked them into a semi truck, dead instantly...you just never know when some idiot is going to kill you

When I think of nick, I think of lakers.... Sorry....

And last time I checked, someone has to pull the trigger to kill people.

During all the election bullshit I kept telling myself that it was going to be over in November and that hopefully there would be some reprieve from all the political crap on Facebook and Twitter and other forms of social media. Sadly we've transitioned directly from elections into gun control. I'm tired of hearing about it.

What crap.

The Van Exel says it was accidental. Well, you can't accidentally shoot and kill someone without something to shoot with.
Apparently the prosecution says otherwise since he's being charged with murder, not manslaughter. I have no idea what actually happened. Maybe they are right, they had an argument and he shot. If you are a hothead and unarmed you punch someone. They usually live.

And if, I say if, that list of what kills more people is true, so? More people die of malaria than of prostate cancer, but I bet if you boys get prostate cancer you won't take it lightly.

As for no more politics on this board, I'm not the one who started 1083529325 threads.

Good way to ignore the story. One person is dead and yes, Van Exel's son is in serious trouble.

Should we outlaw cars since the car kills people and not the driver?

Most on that list are accurate.

Amount of people that die from guns per year is 28,736 (16,603 are suicides, 11,250 are homicides, 661 are accidents, 222 are unknown incidents).

Amount that die from cancer: 10.9 million

Amount that die from heart attacks: 17.1 million

Amount that die from car accidents: 42,636

EDIT about the car accident thingy:

Car Crash Stats: There were nearly 6,420,000 auto accidents in the United States in 2005.

The financial cost of these crashes is more than 230 Billion dollars. 2.9 million people were injured and 42,636 people killed.

About 115 people die every day in vehicle crashes in the United States -- one death every 13 minutes.

You could stab them. You could hit them with a baseball bat. You could drive over them with a car. People do stupid things when they're angry.

So you would take guns away from all the people who use them as protection (including many women) simply because a small percentage of people choose to abuse them and harm others?

Maybe regulate guns the way they do cars.

You mean not very well? Last time I checked, any moron could get a drivers license, so implementing something along those lines with guns wouldn't make much difference, would it?

There's no such thing as accidentally shooting someone with a gun.

It requires either gross negligence or deliberate action. It's either self-defense, manslaughter, or murder. When it's called an accident, what it really means is the police have let a criminal skate.

You sure? I actually had an uncle that was shot during hunting (wasn't killed thank God). You think that was deliberate?

As a NON-gun guy, I still have yet to see a gun, all by its self, kill somebody. If somebody wants to kill another person, they will just use what they can. Guns, knives, poison.

Nothing is being done when it comes to vehicles?

We have speed limits
We have a whole book of traffic laws (school buses stop at railroad tracks to vehicular homicide)
you lose your license if you drive under the influence (for life on the 3rd one and you go to prison)
you need a license
you need insurance
lose license for many differnt reason incluiding 3 moving violations in a year
you need to take a class and pass tests (including an eye test)

Of course you can't ban cars, there needs to be a balance. Just like no one here is saying ban guns. Just regulate it in a serious fashion, like they do when it comes to driving a vehicle.

If anything you've proven the point of many gun owners.

All that regulation and there's STILL idiots who kill people because they're negligent. The problem isn't too many or not enough gun laws, it's that this country doesn't address mental illness.

It never stops. There is always something to be outraged about ... just ask the media and politicians, they shape what we're supposed to be outraged about at any given time.

This thread is a great example of how the media shapes the conversation in the USA.

I will add that the Democrats didn't seem to concerned about supplying guns to Mexican drug cartels the last two years. Must not have been a political advantage in having a national discussion on all of the deaths directly tied to those guns. That plan backfired, but a school shooting? That's just too good to not exploit for a political agenda.

guns are dangerous, no doubt, if you have one, odds go up that someone in your house will be killed by a gun

same for cars

and tylenol

And micro machines.... have you ever stepped on one of those things? Fuckin deadly man....

Guns don't kill people. People don't kill people. Bullets kill people.

As for Van Exel, I try to pretend that Voshon Lenard was here for two years, instead of remembering that that Piss-and-Purple douchebag ever played in Portland.
