OT: How the hell is Brian Shaw STILL available?

Seems like for the last 2-3 years, he has been rumored for every position and has been thought to be the <most> likely to be the next great coach.

I don't understand how he can still be available. I'll take him over Stotts.

I see nothing to suggest he would be a good pick. He was an assistant for the lakers for a few years, they had the best idea as anyone about his abilities, but when the hired they went with mike brown. He could be good, bu why do you think he will be?

He has studied under one of the best coaches in the game - who has given his word, vouched for, and went on a limb for Shaw to get a job, and he still didn't get a job.

There's not a coach that somebody didn't vouch for on their way to their first job. That means zilch. It's a favor from a retiring man to a friend.

I don't think Phil Jackson would vouch for just anyone.

And it was rumored that if Phil coached or took a front office job, that it was contingent on Shaw coming with him.

Does anyone (HCP maybe?) have an insight to what NBA coaching interviews entail? We know so much as fans about what the potential draftees go through in their interviews and workouts, but I never hear about the hiring process for coaches.

I've always heard about how Rick Barry and Kareem Abdul-Jabbar could be great ciacges, but they're both just complete pricks that are hard to work with (I can speak on Barry, after following him, Dr.J, Conley, and Penny around 18 holes with Dicky Pride last year... everyone was sick of his ass by the 9th, dude was even being an overbearing prick to the Dicky Pride about his golfing, trying to tell him all the ways what he was doing was easier than playing basketball).

Shaw, on the other hand, seems like the sort of guy who would really thrive in an interview setting. I have to wonder if the lack of teams looking at him isn't just more situational than it is anything else. I mean, he lost the job to Jason Kidd, a guy with no coaching experience. It was clear that the Nets were going to try to go big or go home, and roll the dice on a big time hire. It'd be another story entirely if Scott had lost the job to say... Doug Collins.

By "Scott" are you referring to Byron Scott? If so, he didn't lose his job to Jason Kidd. Byron Scott hasn't coached the Nets since 2003-04. He coached New Orleans for six seasons and has coached the Cavs for the last three. Kidd will replace P.J. Carlesimo. No surprise the Nets fired P.J. after the 3rd seeded Nest lost to the 6th seeded Bulls in spite of having HCA and half the Bulls roster being sick or injured.

Shaw is an expert in Phil Jackson's system. That counts for zero in any other system. Los Angeles rules the sports media, he was an assistant there, so he gets disproportionate publicity.

When he was a rookie, the Celtics were at a nadir and thought he was Bob Cousy, but they soon dumped him to the Lakers.

Everyone else thought he was a kid with a head shaped like a light bulb. I'd like to see a contest between rookie Shaw and Jason Kidd's kid. They were like twins.

I personally think Byron Scott is one of the worst coaches in the NBA (the '03 Finals still sting)... surprised I made that typo...
