Breaking News: Costs of wine projected to sky rocket...
Wow I'm glad this waited until I left San Francisco. Hopefully everybody is ok.
I'm glad to see you weighed in Vic....I've been wondering if you were still in Frisco.....! Glad your home safe....!
I left Southern Louisiana, just months before Katrina, and Rita a month later....!
Unreal......
Thanks. Was there for just a couple of days and then went off to Hawaii. I enjoyed seeing San Francisco though. There's a very cool old time feel to that city,
Which Islands did you and your family visit Vic? Yep, Frisco has some of the best damned restaurants, and some great Pubs too.....! Some of the best, I've ever visited, no doubt were in SF.
We were in Kauai for the week. My wife's cousin got married there so we had that and some other events with family. It's a really beautiful island and as green as anything I've ever seen. Some really nice beaches as well. If I was to go back I think I would go to Maui. I had never been to San Francisco so that was really cool. There's a Little Italy and Chinatown section that while different than New York was fun to go see. I loved going to the one of the outdoor stands by the Piers and getting the bread bowl filled with clam chowder. Walking around and seeing the hills, Alcatraz and the Golden Gate Bridge takes you back to those old shows and movies from the 70s. I'd definitely recommend a visit to anyone who has never been.
love that Napa Wine, I'd rather have a Stout Pint of Guiness....LOL,

No argument there... But I don't like wine anyway

Don't like wine? Then Hammer I contend that you haven't tasted good wine yet.
That could be true, but every red has both made me gag & given me a headache.. Whites I just don't enjoy... And according to my former boss who lived in France for 15+ years, zinfendels don't count as wine....
...I've always preferred Rhine wines.

Fuck the French, they are just pissed because only hearty California root stock could save their vineyards. Unfortunately most French get confused by Zins, same name but completely different species. CA Zins have a really high brick, can support very high alcohol content due to sugar complexities as a result of longer growing season and ability to tolerate wicked heat and loamy soil. Single varietal can produce complex wines that require 3+ bourdeau. And doesn't require significant aging....3-5 years max. CA mastery of the Zin really impacted the high end wine market.
You should see how many expat French wine makers reside in Paso Robles.
As for the headaches with reds, you could have an allergy to sulphates, in which case your screwed. And whites for the most part are like drinking dessert.
...I've always preferred Rhine wines.
Rhine varietals are nice if served chilled. Riesling and Gewürztraminer are great examples. Claiborne & Churchill Vinters are high on my list. Now Rhone varietals are also gaining a lot of ground in CA. Syrah, Marsanne, Viogner, Roussanne (all from the North Rhone), plus Grenache, Mourvedre, Counoise, and Muscat (from South Rhone) all being grown in central CA. All being used in Rhone style blends (Cotes, Chateaus), but I've added straight syrah, viogner, grenache, mourvedre and muscat (late harvest) to our collection.
Several high end boutiques are doing blends that compete with Châteauneuf-du-Pape and exceed the complexity profiles.
...actually, I got hooked on the Rhine variety probably 30 years ago. I began with Liebfraumilch ("Mothers Milk")...and today, believe it or not, the Rhine I drink comes from your neck of the woods (Cali)...Annie and I only drink (don't laugh) Carlo Rossi Rhine. It comes in a freaking GALLON jug and cost $14 a gallon...for us, it just suits our tastes.
..."the cheapest grapes make the best wine".
Cheapest grapes grow in high volume with minimal care. There is a reason why Pinot Hours are so expensive....high maintenance grapes.

The headaches aren't bad, but never really cared for the taste.... I should clarify that whites are hit or miss... In any case, as Mattingly said, I'd much prefer some stout or even a lager...
Pinot Gris....totally unrelated to Pinot Noir....is a chef's wine. Anyone that is a pg snob doesn't really cook, especially in the summer.
Watching my wife and her dad prepare a summer lunch always involves an ice cold bottle of PG. Its 5 o'clock somewhere....
I was a big beer fan in college....sampled most of the 300+ beer menu at Holmes & Watson Pub in Troy NY. Loved spontaneously fermented beer and Belgian brown ales. Red wine was a natural progression. Beer is a meal itself, wine is flavor facilator. Don't get me wrong, beer pairs nicely with food in moderation, but then so do infused vodcas. Wine IMHO is much more versatile.
I can't think of a meal which wouldn't be complimented by a beer of some sort....
