It amazes me how backwards and irresponsible the thinking of one school can be. Congrats PSU you lobbied and lobbied the No Clue Athletic Association and finally got rewarded with a lift of your bowl ban and scholarship reduction after ONLY two years. Football is restored and all the 100,000 Nittany Lion fans can get back to cheering for a team that was made and rewarded under the cloud of abuse for almost the entirety of its relevancy as a powerhouse!
The NCAA should not have had to get involved in this mess "FIRST", rather this prestigious university should have self governed and shut their football program down for 4 years minimum! No need for a NCAA investigation, Penn ST. should just have put out a press statement like this "these horrific crimes happened on our campus, mostly on our football facilities for many years and we covered it up as an institution. Our football program and its leadership clearly needs to be reassessed from the top down and for the next 4 years that's exactly what we'll do! All the other sports programs will remain in tact but this step must be taken to send a message to the seriousness of these crimes!"
PSU had the power to do just that, instead they put it in the hands of an organization that is so corrupt many wonder why it's still around. I wouldn't allow the NCAA to govern a pie eating contest let alone a multi billion dollar college sport. I'm sure USC must be marveling at the HYPROCASY shown in this latest NCAA blunder!
Today PSU looks like a university more concerned with football boosters, bowl games, recruiting and ticket sales than one of a leading academic institution taking full responsibility for the actions of its faculty and football program that seriously went astray at the tragic expense of the kids in its own community. The fact the PSU was lobbying the NCAA from day 1 of the initial punishment should clearly shows this institution itself didn't fully understand as a whole how egregious these crimes look like to the rest of the country. Embarrassment and humility should have been the only thing coming out of PSU as opposed to anger or resentment for their punishment.
Some will say that PSU football players shouldn't be punished, CORRECT! They should have all been allowed to transfer without any eligibility issues. Happy Valley then should have been put on ice for 4 years by their own school!
PSU has used the NCAA as a scapegoat to avoid addressing the lack of institutional control on their own campus spanning over decades. Making this a football issue is completely cowardly. This is a PSU issue and "THEIR" football PROGRAM just happens to be the responsible party. These horrible crimes could have happened just as easily in the Math Department but that wing doesn't sell 110k seats at 130 a ticket on a Saturday now do they?
