Sounds to me like he was pissed that he was on the bubble. So he said FU, I have better things to do. Quit before getting cut. Maybe he did have family matters to attend to, but I bet that his ego was a factor too.

No way Rondo was gonna get cut, it would have been Gordon or Curry.

wasn't he starting for them?

"Seemingly pegged a starter in a deep backcourt, Rondo's time with Team USA went sour quickly. He was benched after a sluggish start against Lithuania Saturday, then didn't leave his warm-ups Sunday against Spain."

" I think I'm on the bubble," Rondo told ESPN.com's Chris Sheridan. "Just looking at the obvious -- I got a DNP last game. That pretty much speaks for itself"

But I agree, cutting him would have been a mistake.

So he started one game, DNP the next. That's pretty funny.

I think this is a power play from Coach K. Rondo is clearly the best PG they had, but not really suited for Coach K-ball. This makes me hope even more that the US loses.

Clearly, you were not viewing a scenario where Derek Rose was on the court.

Why would you being rooting against Team USA? Like seriously?

Clearly, you were not viewing a scenario where Derek Rose was on the court.

Rose is a PG like Dwyane Wade is a PG. Rose is very valuable for them (no player in the world can slow him down one-on-one) and he could certainly start next to Chauncey (so he wouldn't have to be the main PG), but the idea that Westbrook deserves to be on the team over Rondo? Silly. (Unless it was to keep Durant happy.) Basically two things worked against Rondo: Tyson Chandler can't score, and Coach K. was obviously scared to have Rondo be a bench player, and figured if he wasn't the #1 PG he had to go

A. Sherrod Blakely:

Rose's presence gave Team USA another scorer in the starting lineup. And in the closing seconds of their one-point win over Spain, the game was decided by free throws - one of Rondo's biggest weaknesses - made by Rondo's replacement, Rose.

And Westbrook provides the defensive presence Team USA will need on the perimeter, in addition to being a better shooter and scorer than Rondo.

There will be many theories floated as to why Rondo is no longer on the team, but it was his poor shooting that ultimately put Rondo in position to be cut prior to his announced withdrawal.

Knowing the U.S. would see more than their share of zone defenses moving forward, Rondo's lack of a consistent outside jumper made him a bit of a liability against international competition.

"It's not so much what Rajon has to show, it's what our team needs," Team USA and Duke head coach Mike Krzyzewski told reporters prior to Rondo withdrawing on Tuesday. "We've found a good lineup, and the international game is so different from the NBA game, you can ask any of these guys. Part of it is to make sure that we try not to have two non-shooters out on the court, and there's the physicality, too."

So when you look at Team USA's roster, the only two non-shooters of the bunch were Rondo and center Tyson Chandler, who was replaced in the starting lineup by Lamar Odom.

Because of Team USA's lack of big men, there's no way they would part with Chandler . . . which, to some degree, left Rondo even more vulnerable to getting cut.

I don't buy the "you can't have a non-shooting PG" - Spain seems to do okay with Rubio. The chip on Rondo's shoulder just got even bigger.

As a Celtics fan, I would rather have him shooting jumpers all day in a gym than playing on this team. So I'm happy this happened.

Wade isn't a PG, but Rose is. He just makes bad decisions and horribly times his passes. Watch a Bulls game, you'll know exactly what i'm talking about. He's not exactly shoot-first.

...at committing turnovers and allowing the other team to score at will.

Try using your imagination instead of labeling people as odd. That's how wars start.

Rondo - 3 TOpg 10 Apg
Rose - 2.8 TOpg 6 Apg

K.
rondo - to% 19.3
rose - to% 12.5

to% being turnovers per 100 plays. rondo has a better assist/turnover ratio, but still turns the ball over more.

k.

I'd rather have Rose on my team then Rondo, sorry.

It would be nice to have that choice. And certainly Rose has all the hype, being drafted #1 and all. But of course Rondo has a shitload more amazing playoff highlights. And of course, that choice was not the one the US team was faced with. It was more like Rondo or one of Stephen Curry, Russell Westbrook, Andre Iguodala, Kevin Love... It's pretty pathetic if you have to drop a player of Rondo's caliber merely because you have so few, and so shitty big men on your team.

Here's an interesting take on the whole Rondogate.

Watching the preliminary matches it seems clear that teams are going to pack in the paint and dare our guards to shoot. Call me crazy, but I think the best starting guard lineup would be Curry and Billups. Put guys out there who will absolutely punish other teams for sagging. We've got tons of guys who can slash into the paint.

Anybody remember the embarrassment of the 2004 roster? Tim Duncan, Allen Iverson, LeBron James, Dwyane Wade, Amar'e Stoudemire, Shawn Marion, Carlos Boozer, Carmelo Anthony, Stephon Marbury, Richard Jefferson, Lamar Odom, Emeka Okafor. There are some similarities. They looked good on paper, but in practice it was one pretty good center (Duncan/Chandler), a bunch of slashers, and point guards who couldn't shoot.

Westbrook/Rose/Rondo are just a little too reminiscent to me of the PG play we had on that team.

Obviously, it's not a perfect comparison. (The way Larry Brown used LeBron was utterly incompetent. We had nobody on that team who could shoot like Durant does. These guards are better defenders than those were.) But international play is even tougher now than it was then. Chandler is a much worse offensive player than Duncan was.

I just have a feeling that we're going to see Rose and Westbrook left wide open as they brick 22 footers, and that's going to make it tough to win. I really like Rondo as a player, but I'm glad he left instead of Curry.

lmao what a bullshit stat. Rose shoots a lot more (almost twice as much) with those possessions, while Rondo is doing his job as a PG.

One other thing that's becoming obvious--if he can get and stay healthy, Oden will be on that team in two years. Aldridge probably too, if he wants it.

Wouldn't it be awesome if we had Oden, Roy and Aldridge there then? More than anything, it'd mean our guys were finally so rock-solid healthy that it was a no-brainer to send them out to compete. Extremely doubtful that'd happen, but it's late August and a Blazer fan can dream....

The risk of inury would be scary even if they had been healthy but that would be so fun to see. The sense of pride would be off the charts.
