The move has not yet been announced, but two sources close to the situation on Thursday confirmed Thabeet's impending D-League assignment to the Dakota Wizards to ESPN.com.

Thabeet will thus become the highest draft pick ever sent to the D-League by an NBA team. Players can only be assigned to D-League duty by their NBA teams during their first two seasons as a pro.

Thabeet, 23, is averaging just 2.5 points and 2.9 rebounds in 10.3 minutes per game for the Grizzlies and will supplant Portland's Martell Webster -- who played eight games for the now-defuct Fort Worth Flyers in the D-League in 2005-06 as the No. 6 overall pick in the draft -- as the highest draftee ever to play in the NBA's official minor league.

Well, on the bright side he gets to leave Memphis and live in Bismarck....

Bismarck, North Dakota.

That is exactly what the NBA D league is for, and the dark ones know Thabeet needs it badly. That guy should never have been drafted in the first round.

fixed :)

HAHAHAHA i told all the uconn idiots her he would suck in the NBA.

All the uconn homers are also sold that Stanley Robinson will be a stud in the NBA. God i fucking hate uconn.

Despite their recent run of success, Memphis is still a pretty screwy franchise.

No you broke it. I meant to say first round. As in first round of the draft.

dammit and I thought I was being helpful!

Ya, he told ALL YOU UCONN IDIOTS! There are so many of you on here huh? Where are all you uconn idiots on the Blazer forum now?

You know who will never be sent to the DLeague? The 21 guys drafted after Thabeet.

I am actually still shocked that with their success they were shopping both Conley and Mayo before the deadline.

Watching Thabeet I get flashbacks:

i just emailed my buddy who loved thabeet... his reply LMAO'

That’s more embarrassing than Greg Oden’s career…

Actually, no its not.

I'm terribly unsurprised by this development. Memphis way over-drafted for size and now likely has an inferior talent on their hands. Who knew?

I think they would have been better off hiding him and trading him than sending him to the D league.

I'm probably in the WAY minority here, but I'd love to see him in a Blazer uniform. If Webster isn't going to get more than 12 mpg the rest of the way (or the rest of his Portland contract?), I think 7'3" of emergency big man > 12 mpg of one of my favorite players.

That said, I might rather jettison Rudy and have Webster backup the 2 and 3 for around 20 mpg.

They can't "hide him." If they stop playing their top-three draft pick after his poor play, everyone will know why. Or they'll assume injury that Memphis is attempting to hide. Nobody's going to trade anything of value for him at that point.

You can when you have Marc Gasol. It provides a perfectly adequate reason for him not to play, much, if at all.

So many folks around here have no fortitude to let the young guards learn, meanwhile, teams all around the league are letting their young guards learn, and after some rough times, are flourishing. Rudy and Bayless are going to take their lumps. But if we are fortunate, they will turn them into decent players down the line. I would much rather take my lumps, than put the teams fortune into the hands of what is pretty much an utter failure of a draft pick.

Webster = Fail.

Some funny quotes from Woj's twitter:

One NBA assistant who does much scouting/prep work texted: "He needs to work on two things to get back to NBA...His offense and defense."

Another front office executive on Thabeet: "If he works -- really works -- he can be Dampier."

Way in the minority and/or way high. Think about how much money he makes as the third overall pick in the draft? I'd rather play Jeff Pendergraph as undersized emergency center at 400K a year 10 times out of 10 rather than carry that stiff for 5-7 million.

Any chance we could get him to use as spare parts for Oden?

why would you want him? hes not worth oden, or spare parts

I think he means using Thabeet as spare parts. Like, if Oden needs a ligament or tendon or a kidney...we take it from Thabeet.

I didn't say to trade him for Oden, I said we should get him and use him to fix Oden.

"Gentlemen we can rebuild him.

We have the technology to make the worlds first bionic center.

Greg Oden will be that center.

Better then he was before.

Better... Stronger... Faster!"

Ah, either so imaginative, or so politically correct.
