OT: The Portland AFL team is named the Thunder

No, people, we are not getting Durant, no matter how hard you try. :MARIS61:

Totally stupid move. Selling Thunder gear in a 1 1/2 major sport town where the main draws division rival is the Thunder is insanely stupid.

Literally the dumbest marketing move I have witnessed in a while

I agree 100%. Plus, thunderstorms are extremely rare in the Portland metro area, so the name makes even less sense.

The other names were lame too, but at least they had the added plus of not being the Thunder. Portland Enforcers at least sounded tough, Thunder sounds like a wnba name.

As long as they left Steel Heads alone. I want that for the NHL team that will eventually come to Portland

Was Rain just too obvious of a name to use lol

What the fuck?

This organization must be full of literal retards.. Every comment, whether it's here, the article, or facebook, is talking about how bad the choice is.

I was looking forward to having football here.. But there's no way I can get behind the Portland Thunder.

Just awful.

You guys do know there's at least some history, here, right?

Portland had a franchise known as the Portland Thunder (they were the Portland Storm first) in the World Football League in the 1970's.

I don't love the name, but it's not terrible, especially when factoring in historical consideration.

Oh yes the rich history of a minor league team that only played ONE year in 1975

wikipedia said:
The Portland Thunder took the Storm's place in 1975 and lasted until the entire WFL folded halfway through their second season. The Thunder's office in downtown closed in October 1975.[1]

I was very excited for arena football but I will not support a team named the Thunder. I'm so pissed they made this move, its a slap in the face to NBA basketball fans in Portland both because its a rival team AND more importantly because they stole our sister town long time rival. People here are very bitter and pissed off about the way the Sonics left town and now we are the lone ugly child city in the NBA stuck in the middle of nowhere.

The "Growlers" name was great, it means something to Portland specifically and has a dual meaning.

Gosh this just pisses the hell out of me I was so excited to support the team I was going to look at getting season tickets but there is no chance I do that now. Who are the IDIOTS making these decisions?!!!!

At least they aren't the Portland Timberwolves . . . which could be more appropriate than Thunder for the NW area.

I didn't say anything about the history being rich, but it does make some sense.

I don't understand why people are up in arms about it. I keep hearing people refer to it like we copied OKC, which is flat out wrong and stoooopid.

Growlers would have been a great name. I don't hate Thunder, but Sonics would have been more amusing.

I think they left off the last part of the name.

Joking aside, horrible name. I am guessing this gets fixed quick or AFL will be again short lived in Portland.

Now if it was ThunderCATS I would totally support the team. LionOOOOOO

I wonder how many hundreds of thousands of dollars in lost revenue this will cost the team. People here are dying for more legit sports. Timbers support is great. It seem like some management is trying to screw themselves. Maybe they want the team to tank so it can move to LA.

I remember when the Timbers MGMT caved to demand to alter the new logo, maybe the Portland AFL MGMT will take a tip from that playbook and change the name.

Yeah, I thought of that Portland team when the Thunder became the Thunder. They should have just gone with the Portland Storm instead.

Ridiculously dumb move. If the other names were worse, that's still no excuse. Pick good names to choose from in the first place. Seems kind of obvious.

Just as Oklahoma Thunder are more appropriately named than Portland Thunder, Portland Timberwolves makes more since than Minnesota Timberwolves. (Let's not start the Utah Jazz, Memphis Grizzlies, etc talk -- been there.)

I kind of like "Growlers". The NW is the original micro-brew capital of the world.

LOL. Portland SuperSonics. I love it.

I am extremely skeptical that it will work, regardless of the name. AFL flopped the last time it was here.

If this is a PR stunt to drum up support for the Growlers name they are genius!

One of the options being kicked around was the Gray Wolves, which I found acceptable.

I liked the Sasquatch, but my submission didn't win.
