Just out of curiosity, how many games do you think Nate has actually out coached the other teams coach?

vs how many he's been out coached?

he was severely out coached tonight. I'd be embarrassed if I was the coach on the ugly end of this out-coaching extravaganza.
 
I remember last year when I thought to myself that Nate really coached a good game.

I think he outcoached Pops in our game this year when he let Miller call plays and they ran.

I think it's 3 or 4 to 1 on Nate being outcoached
 
Nate outcoached himself tonight and that lead to our loss. His decision to sit LA and Greg in the first half was so stupid! Then to keep allowing our guys to play rat ball and make lazy pass after lazy pass is just unacceptable.
 
There is one NBA coach in the top 16 teams that is a worse coach than Mac, and that would be Mike Brown

I don't mind Nate relying on certain players, but when those players aren't good enough to rely on when they're not producing, that's what bugs me.

Blake isn't good enough to get himself more than 25 minutes when he's not scoring. He is an albatross when he's not hitting his shots.

He wont be the player from last year, people have to get over that, and Nate needs to wake up soon

The only guys Nate can match up with coach-wise are guys like Dunleavy and Mike Brown. Most other nights you are behind the 8 ball. Even Mike Brown will go further than Nate will at trying to force teams adjust to what he is doing. But he is stubborn as well when things don't work.

Nate was completely annhiliated by Adelman in last years playoffs. The topper to me was when he decided moving Rudy into the starting lineup for the first time all season was during the playoffs. Hey, maybe it would have been a good idea to give that a run during the regular season first?

The topper is if you read the article about the game Nate is all like "We didn't do anything we talked about". No they fracking didn't Nate. Because you can't take advantage of your bigs if they aren't on the fracking floor.
 
I think if you went around the league, most fans would say their coach gets out-coached more than he out-coaches his opponents. In general, it appears fans think that players win games, and coaches lose games, so that makes it very difficult for a coach to have a favorable outcome in a poll of this nature.

We are lucky that KP doesn't use that sort of logic and doesn't have the same sort of knee-jerk reactions many fans have. I'm very glad we have a GM that recognizes how great of a coach we have. That's what makes him a professional, and us fans.

What has made Nate a great coach in your opinion?

I ask this in all sincerity. What has Nate himself done that makes him a great coach?
 
You can make your argument that they know more than all the fans because they are "Pro's" all you want. In almost every industry besides medicine, people come in from outside the field and end up doing better than their predecessors all the time. Just because guys are in the industry doesn't make them masters. Remember, John Nash was a professional GM too. Does that make him immediately more qualified than any of us about making basketball decisions?
 
Playing Roy at SF so he can appease KP and his man-love for Blake is the topper for me. Blake hasn't earned a starting role. He's had one decent game so far this season.

The other part of the blame has to go to Pritchard and bringing in a guy who doesn't fit. Brandon is really our PG. He runs the plays and everything goes though Brandon Roy. So you bring in a PG who is a drive-n-kick guard who can't shoot?

KP mishandled RLEC and his makeup move caused this imbalance in the rotation.

He has been outcoached the last NINE times we've gone to Golden State. His team is NEVER ready when we play down there.
 
Do you call what Nellie does coaching? He has a ton of wins, and I think that is due more to longevity then ability. But do you think Nate was outcoached or were his players outplayed? I think the latter.

When a bunch of "professional" jocks play like they have anvils chained to their Prince Alberts, part of the blame falls on the coach.

has put together officiant offensive scheme over the past few years.
has developed a lot of young talent
has got his players to come together and play defense
has his team playing at a consistent level as much as any team
has a team that rarely gets blown out, and often blows out other teams
has the ear of his star players
handles himself like a professional on and off the court
demands his players handle themselves like professionals on and off the court, and they do.
has a balanced group of assistance that want to coach under him
has shown willingness to change his style as a coach when he feels it's necessary

That's my opinion and a lot of those things are qualities you won't find in every NBA coach. I don't think he's "perfect" and I think "near perfect" is the standard for most NBA fans. I think if you've coached, you understand that there are two coaches trying to be perfect, so the odds of either of them being 60% successful night in and night out is difficult.

I have the luxury of watching a lot of offensive sets that other teams run (because of my job) and I think people are often uneducated in their criticisms that the Portland offense is more predictable or simplistic than other NBA teams.

Has had the benefit of outstanding offensive rebounders.
Who has he developed?
Let's see how that defense does against good teams. GS put up 108 last night.

Those things add up to him being a "great" coach? Really? I expected some more concrete reasons that he's a "great" coach...

Like... handling himself like a professional is relevant to being a great coach? How is it that some of the greatest coaches ever have personality quirks and are criticized for that sort of thing? Nelson is one of the best coaches ever, and he's a bit of a joke in terms of professionalism and how he's dealt with some issues with his players.

I am not going to go down your list, but that he "has shown willingness to change his style as a coach when he feels it's necessary" is not much of a statement. He has NOT changed his style in terms of pace (he's been consistently slow in both places he's been) and if he doesn't have good judgment to determine when it's necessary, then the statement is meaningless.

Handling yourself as a professional is key if you expect your players to act like professionals. So yes, to me, it's important. I don't the current Don Nelson is a great coach, and part is that is because he no longer acts like a professional, and in turn, neither do most the players on the Warriors.

I think allowing his PG to call plays is a change in style, considering that isn't something he's done before. If you expect him to change all his core principles to prove that he has a willingness to change, then of course we won't agree.

I didn't realize I said he was a "great coach" in this thread. I still by NBA standards, he's an above average coach. I guess it is safe to say every NBA coach is a great coach, but I know even some wouldn't agree with that.

Only against Pop, which is kinda ironic since he'e the best coach he's faced so far this season.

There is one most important thing he is missing. A thing that sets apart the great coaches, from the good coaches. The ability to think outside the box. If something doesn't seem right, you have the balls to make a change, regardless who's ego is hurt.

I don't understand this post at all. I don't see any points made that counter what I've said.

You asked for my opinion and I gave it to you.

I could spend a year coming up with statistics and visual evidence that Nate is a good coach, and you still wouldn't believe me, so I suppose it doesn't matter what I say.

Every fan base has a vocal minority who always criticizes the coach and think they know better.
