HONOLULU (AP) — Wildfires in Hawaii fanned by strong winds burned multiple structures in areas including historic Lahaina town, forcing evacuations and closing schools in several communities Wednesday, and rescuers pulled a dozen people escaping smoke and flames from the ocean.

The U.S. Coast Guard responded to areas where people went into the ocean to escape the fire and smoky conditions, the County of Maui said in a statement. The Coast Guard tweeted that a crew rescued 12 people from the water off Lahaina.

The county tweeted that multiple roads in Lahaina were closed with a warning: “Do NOT go to Lahaina town.”

Fire was widespread in Lahaina, including Front Street, an area of the town popular with tourists, County of Maui spokesperson Mahina Martin said in a phone interview early Wednesday. Traffic has been very heavy as people try to evacuate and officials asked people who weren’t in an evacuation area to shelter in place to avoid adding to the traffic, she said.

The National Weather Service said Hurricane Dora, which was passing to the south of the island chain at a safe distance of 500 miles (805 kilometers), was partly to blame for gusts above 60 mph (97 kph) that knocked out power as night fell, rattled homes and grounded firefighting helicopters. Dangerous fire conditions created by strong winds and low humidity were expected to last through Wednesday afternoon, the weather service said.

those burning in the U.S. West. They tend to break out in large grasslands on the dry sides of the islands and are generally much smaller than mainland fires.

Fires were rare in Hawaii and on other tropical islands before humans arrived, and native ecosystems evolved without them. This means great environmental damage can occur when fires erupt. For example, fires remove vegetation. When a fire is followed by heavy rainfall, the rain can carry loose soil into the ocean, where it can smother coral reefs.

A major fire on the Big Island in 2021 burned homes and forced thousands to evacuate.

The island of Oahu, where Honolulu is located, also was dealing with power outages, downed power lines and traffic problems, said Adam Weintraub, communication director for Hawaii Emergency Management Agency.

If the Lahaina Banyan Court is damaged, I'm gonna rage.

This is one of my coworkers hometown. She's devastated and can't get a hold of a lot of her family. Very scary and tragic.

Hey, Wilsonville ain't on fire........at least yet. Though 3 acres in the area went up the other day.......and I suspect that BG will tell you that, living on the side of an active volcano, what's a few flames?
I think BG is safe since everything from Mt View to South Point has already burned to the ground a few times...our place is pretty clear but my son's house by Autzen Stadium has had bad air for a week now.

yes, the stench from Oregon’s ditching the PAC-12 must be overwhelming.

We just spent a week at Sunriver and had to deal with smoke from the wildfires. That, coupled with the footage from Maui, makes you think about what a ticking time bomb Sunriver and the other resort communities in the area are. Add a wind event to dry conditions and there's no stopping fires.

Man, Lahaina is just GONE!

On a positive note, it's nice to see that Vince Carter has a new gig.

Wow! End of an era! I remember when Kalapana and the Queen's bath hot spring on the Big Island were wiped out by Kilauea..this really sucks for the residents who have to pick up their lives and start over

I can’t even imagine how long it’s going to take to rebuild. Years, I’d guess. In the meantime, all those thousands of folks who worked and lived there are just destroyed.

I guess no Maui Invitational this year. Horrible.

Just got an update. She hasn't heard from her grandma and uncle since Wednesday. Her mother is currently visiting Oregon from Maui right now. I can't imagine what they're going through. 36 have died, as of this morning.

I hope her family is ok..this is a horrible tragedy for those folks.

My Maui co-workers have been heavily impacted. A couple have had to sleep at the Maui office. Lahaina is decimated. Deaths are being heavily under-reported thus far, as a friend has told me (his brother-in-law is a Maui PO). The Big Island wild fires were not huge and mostly contained pretty quickly. They were up near where you’d be when heading from the Hilo side over Saddle Road into Kona. I mean, there’s always danger with fire, especially when it’s dry and heavy winds, so they definitely had some road closures and had to re-route some traffic and had folks prepared to evacuate, but overall, pretty light. As riverman said, nothing where I’m at (Mountain View on the Hilo side).

We had several customers lose their businesses and/or homes on Maui. It’s been pretty somber around here. We were talking about it today during a casual convo after a meeting. And I showed everyone the alert I’d just gotten on my phone about looking “fire weather” arriving in Oregon.

We’ve pissed Mother Nature off in a major way.

What is he even implying. That they got bombed or something? These right wing lunatics are so far gone their conspiracies aren’t even comprehendible by anyone outside of their cult anymore.

Jewish forces have been trying to dominate the Pacific for many, many years.

Pearl Harbor - few know it, but in 1941, 98.23% of Japanese people were Jewish!

It's no surprise that Maui would be their next logical target.

I believe we need to harden defenses around Knott's Berry Farm before they strike the mainland.
