huh? i believe NY has a mandatory 24 months sentence for an unregistered handgun, he got a few months off for good behavior

He had an expired concealed weapons permit from Florida at the time. 34 other states honor Florida's. Only 15 leftist/regulation obsessed states do not recognize a Florida permit. NY happens to be one of them.
It's not like he was purposely breaking the law. He's just a procrastinator or his schedule was too busy to get it done right then.
Were it not expired it would have been legal in most states, which use common sense and reciprocate just as they would with a marriage or driver's license.
Campaigning racist billionaire, 2nd Amendment foe Michael New York Mayor Michael Bloomberg screamed hysterically to the press that any punishment short of the minimum 3½ years for unlawful carrying of a handgun would be "a mockery of the law."
Had it been a white elite they'd have been allowed to plead down and simply pay a fine. But a black man carrying a gun?
Simply can't be tolerated. Gotta put them in their place. 2nd Amendment was written for white folks.
NY, once a proud representative of America as the melting pot to the world, has become a Vatican-like state run by bankers and tycoons, apart and above the union, where the Constitution and Bill of rights no longer apply.

He'll be closer to catching passes on videotape from Uncle Rico.
And by virtue of the fact that he stuck an unregistered weapon into the waistband of his sweatpants and didn't have the safety on and ended up shooting himself in the leg (which violated a couple of different weapons safety rules and principles--and luckily didn't kill someone at the club he was in) he showed that he's not qualified to be licensed as a weapons carrier.
