Pops to Coach The Blazers?

First, let me say that I like Nate.

However, even given the fact of our injuries, I think Nate is not doing his best job of coaching thus far. The two PG lineup was ok for a little jump start, but it is past it’s course and proven what it was to show- that Miller is the starting PG and Roy is getting the crap beat out of him against bigger SF’s. But Nate won’t let it go. In addition, he’s doing to Webster what he did to Fry and killing his confidence.

If we win close to 50 and a first round exit again, I think Nate just may not re-sign for next season.

That’s where Popovich comes in. SA’s team has circled the bowl and is slowly floating out to sea. Who wants to stay in SA, of all places, and go thru a 6 year rebuilding process? He & KP go way back and he is a deeply respected coach.

I just won’t be surprised if he’s our coach next year.

He won’t leave Duncan, and that’s why this month he quietly signed a contract extension that will keep him coach until the summer of 2012. True to form, he didn’t want any announcement made.

See, I agree 100%. He's coached big men to several titles. I think he'd be the perfect coach for this team.

Popovich advised KP before the draft in 2007 on who he would go with. I don't think there was much doubt who he would have went with.

I have no doubt in my mind that he could make him an all star and top three center in this league.

It would also put to rest any fan worry about beign outcoached on a regular basis. Popovich is a coach who likes to dictate the tempo and lineup mismatches against the other team, rather than purely react to what the other coach is doing. IMO, that is the only way to reach the elite level in the NBA. You dictate tempo. You dictate the mistmatch's. Keep the other team reacting, and you are always ahead of the game.

As much as I hate his arrogant, whiny ass, I think Phil Jackson would be perfect for this roster. Look how well the triangle worked with Shaq and Kobe. It could also work great with Oden and Roy. Hell, right now Bynum is looking great, too. So, Phil can obviously have success with dominant big men (Lakers), and without (Bulls). The triangle also gets the other players involved and maximizes the production of marginal, one-dimensional players and standstill shooters (John Paxon == Steve Blake).

Whatever, it's not happening. I'm not yet on the fire Nate warpath, but I sure would like to see an offense that takes davantage of Oden and Roy and also creates easy baskets for those incapable of creating them for themselves. I see Tex Winter is no longer listed as a Lakers coach, but they did a smart thing when he retired from coaching, they kept him on the payroll as a special consultant to keep other teams from hiring him to teach them the subtelties of his triangle offense. To bad, plus at 87 years old, I'm not sure he be interested in actively coaching again (not as a replacement to Nate, but as an offensive assistant coach).

Yea it is interesting you mention that. Because the Blazers actually do run a few pieces of the triangle offense already.

Let's not forget, Poppovich is the G.M. that made himself head coach. I doubt he's interested in stepping into a subordinate position at this point... Regardless of job titles, I'm pretty sure he runs things in San Antonio.

Not the same situation. Duncan was a lock be selected 1st overall. Does Popovich really advise KP on draft selections? Seems to be a conflict of interest on his part. I'm not sure how involved he is in scouting players to begin with. At the time of the draft most GMs if not all had Oden #1 on their draft boards, but now that we've seen each player's limited body of work in the NBA I think Durant might have changed some minds.
