It's like baseball, except that there are no pitchers, no bats used, the ball is kicked and points are based on where the ball ends up, not where a player ends up.

Other than that, they're very similar. Except soccer has a clock. And offense and defense transition back and forth in soccer.

Um, it's only 3-2 if the missing $15 million is accounted for at this point. So really, there still isn't a deal.

Don't you mean futbal?

Who was the third commissioner to vote for it?

im a big Timbers fan but this whole deal just doesnt sit right with me. i think they're getting in way too over their heads.

perhaps i'll be wrong, but im not convinced PDX could support a team in terms of attendance and big time corporate sponsors.

but most importantly for me is that they dont move the Beavers out to 82nd or wherever. if it's 100% guaranteed to keep it close and in the RQ, then i'll be ok.

just hate to see that ivy wall torn down, the max running by the outfield fence is a thing of beauty.

Actually Timber attendance has been going up. This quote is dated 5/25/07 from PGE Park's website.
With Friday’s attendance of 4,795, the Timbers are within a few hundred fans to break the 500,000 regular-season attendance mark. Since 2001, and including the 2007 season the Timbers have had 499,263 fans visit PGE Park for Timbers matches.
Heres more attendance info on the year Timber Jim was retiring. Again, numbers went up.

I'm certain Timber attendance is increasing, but the question is whether or not it's enough to support an MLS-only stadium. Here in Denver, they built Dick's Sporting Park as soccer only and it's had some trouble.

I agree. Seems ridiculous to me that the MLS has the pull to demand their teams play in a soccer only stadium. I'd be much happier if PGE Park was being renovated (again) to accomidate both MLS and the Beavers.

Would U of P play their soccer games at this new stadium?

If Beckham comes to town, my wifes going to want to go. UGH!

That's because they built it way out in BFE in Commerce City. I have a ton of friends and family spread all around the Denver area in Broomfield, Littleton, Cherry Creek, Boulder, Longmont, Berthoud, Parker, etc., and none of them ever have any desire to go way out to Commerce City. It was a stupid idea to build it there and I think its success or failure has no bearing whatsoever on the success of this refurbished stadium in downtown Portland.

It would essentially be on par with building a stadium in Newberg or Estacada.

Why is it ok for the Sounders to play in Qwest field? That isn't soccer specific.

While I agree that Commerce City sucks, it's a lot closer in than Newberg or Estacada. It's more equivalent to Gresham. Now if you're driving from Littleton, then it's a haul.

Here are the directions from Downtown Denver: http://www.mapquest.com/maps?1c=Den...merce+City&2s=CO&2a=6000+Victory+Way&2z=80022

No. Remember last year, the Pilots hosted the first round, second and third round at home. The female Pilots have a good crowd gathering for their games but not enough that their seating capacity is inadequate for their stadium.

I would only imagine NCAA would be hosting a womens quarter final soccer match at PGE park.

When I was (paid to be) going to UP games in 1994, they had a pretty easy time filling that place up (and iirc it holds about 5000). Of course, I haven't been there in 15 years, and that team had 2 Olympians on it, so maybe things have changed. But if 5000 people will watch women's college soccer, don't you think you can scrape up another 10k around Portland for an MLS team?

Not hard to fill up a stadium if one pays the spectators to attend!

;)

The Portland Timbers reguarly had over 10,000 come out to watch a lower-division USL squad. MLS has much more credibility behind it. So, in addition to the hardcore supporters who made the Timbers one of the attendance leaders in USL, you're going to get the Hispanic crowd, you're going to get the soccer mom's and dad's from the burbs, etc.

what the hell is going to go on at the stadium outside of 15 (yes FIFTEEN!) days a year?

i just read that Qwest Field got the greenlight from the MLS b/c they promised to cover up the upper deck seating, making it feel like an intimate, dense soccer match.

this is incorrect, please post the numbers.

from what ive read they got 10000+ one game and that was Timber Jim's finale/goodbye. i think 6000 is the average.

PSU football and possible other school athletics such as soccer and lacrosse

Timbers exhibition matches and cup competitions outside of the MLS home schedule

Outdoor concerts

Possible X-Games or Dew Action Sports Tour location

US Men's and Women's National Team games

International soccer friendlies

To name a few.

Timbers averaged 8,567 per game, including four out of 15 matches over 10,000. That doesn't even account for the exhibition matches they had with two Mexican division sides and the AC Milan youth squad that saw numbers around 10,000 as well. And when they had Sunderland (at the time, a newly promoted English Premier League squad) over for a Summer friendly a few years ago, there were over 15,000 in attendance.

In the meeting yesterday they estimated that the Portland Beavers draw about 600,000 and the MC draws about 400,000. Is it worth tearing down the MC for an extra 200,000 people when an entertainment/shopping/eating/Nike museum area would draw 1,000,000 +?

From that website here are the totals.

2006 average attendance 5,575 (0.4 % increase from '05)*
2007 average attendance 6,828 (22.5% increase from '06)
2008 average attendance 8,567 (25.5% increase from '07)

Check out this editorial by Willamette Week. Its labled Portland as "Soccertown Or Suckertown" in its article. Go ahead and give us feedback as this was published before the Wednesdays vote.

Its down to 4 cities now: Ottawa, Ontario, Canada; Portland, Ore.; St. Louis, Miz; and Vancouver, British Columbia.

The upside to this, is international players coming to Portland. They will have a fan base who will come to the games instead of watching them on tv. Getting additional sponsors will be tough but Nike just signed an agreement with the Timbers & Beavers back in January 2009. (http://www.pgepark.com/news/index.html?article_id=188)
