95.5 guys are slaying Nate. Saying he almost came across the table at Kenny Vance because Vance had the nerve to suggest the offense might need adjusting. Nate wants to keep the same offense as he has had, and they are all saying....including Tone' that the only reason it was successful two years ago was because we made an abnormally large ammount of our 3's

Never embellishing when it sides with MM. I heard Kenny tell the story last week and he was laughing while he said it, so I bet that's about how "serious" Nate was.

Though he is right that Nates offense is far from perfect.

I didn't hear that he almost came across the table, but I did hear that things got very awkward in Vegas and that Nate gave Vance a pretty cold-blooded stare and his demeanor was not exactly friendly when it was suggested that the offense could stand a little tweaking.

I will say this about Nate, I've grown to hate his offense, but it is his offense and ultimately he's going to sink or swim using it.

With Nate's "bad" offensive scheme - this team was 1st in efficiency in the 54 win season and 7th last year with all the injuries, add the fact that even in the playoffs - with Roy being a no-factor on offense, the team still was 7th in offensive efficiency, and I get back to the fact that this team's problem is not offense. It would be nice to get it better, but that will come with maturity.

Also - Jenny Vance is a douche.

You will note, that the number of wins has increased from year to year, but also as each year passes, we are further removed from the year where we bottomed out in talent.

I like Michael Holton's take on the offense when he was on WaW the other day, "plays don't make players, players make plays." The fact of the matter is that our team sets lousy picks and when you don't set good hard picks in a pick and roll (or pick and pop) offense things don't work properly.

I'm not sure there's a more overrated trait than "playing hard for the coach."

Which of the top 16 teams DON'T play hard for the coach and or themselves?

I'd rather have a coach that gets the best out of his team. Couldn't care less if they play hard for him and it leads to nothing.

Make no mistake, he's mastered the art of strangling a season to death and winning 50 games lulling the opponent to sleep. He still has yet to prove his system can win in the playoffs.

Not sure why were allowing a guy who's never actually proved he can win anything with his system try and slam square pegs into round holes.

I really think all Nate needs to do is delegate some parts of the team a bit more. I believe that is why he brought in more experienced assistants this year. The guys he brought in are very knowledgeable in the game. Every time Bickerstaff has had to take over a team, it has almost always been a bottom rung team that was rebuilding. Much like Lionell Hollins, who had never been successful as a head coach until last year. Hollins was always shafted with a bad team who had fired their coach mid season. Bickerstaff is much the same way, many of the teams he took over were really bad at the time. It doesn't mean they don't know basketball, and it doesn't mean they aren't good communicators. But it does mean they were in charge of a broken team. How many jobs had Alvin Gentry been fired from before he had success in Phoenix last year? How many coaches has Steve Nash made look like a genious? Which one of those factors was truly what was responsible for PHX success last year? We may never know. But Gentry gets the credit.

That's exactly how Nate looked up at me when I suggested that George Karl should put Payton at the 2, Kendall Gill on the bench, and McMillan starting at the 1. Then he saw me smiling and he realized this was in his favor. Then he liked me.

McMillan has a DNA gene that makes the cold stare his first instinct. He cocks his head to a rebellious angle and sizes you up.

As an aside, anyone who wants Payton as assistant coach doesn't know the turmoil he causes.

That's certainly worth considering; the NBA has had an "inmates are running the asylum" kind of vibe to it for some time now. I am however slightly encouraged after hearing Roy's comments when he was interviewed in Vegas, this quote in particular caught my eye, "I got a lot of credit for being a good leader, but it's easy to be a leader when you get to do whatever you want." That tells me that he at least acknowledges that he's got to evolve a little bit as a player if this team is going to achieve a high level of success. The proof -- as always -- is in the pudding.
