Cairo (CNN) -- Angry protesters climbed the walls of the U.S. Embassy in Cairo on Tuesday and hauled down the American flag, replacing it with a black standard with Islamic emblems, apparently in protest of the production of a film thought to insult the Prophet Mohammed.

The incident prompted a volley of warning shots to be fired as a large crowd gathered outside, said CNN producer Mohammed Fahmy, who was on the scene.

The replacement flag read, "There is no God but Allah and Mohammad is his messenger."

Others expressed more general grievances about U.S. policy, chanting anti-American slogans and holding up bits of a shredded American flag to television camera crews in front of the embassy.

An embassy operator told CNN that the facility had been cleared of diplomatic personnel earlier Tuesday, ahead of the apparent threat, while Egyptian riot police were called to help secure the area.

The U.S. Embassy said in a statement Tuesday that it "condemns the continuing efforts by misguided individuals to hurt the religious feelings of Muslims -- as we condemn efforts to offend believers of all religions."

"Respect for religious beliefs is a cornerstone of American democracy," the statement said. "We firmly reject the actions by those who abuse the universal right of free speech to hurt the religious beliefs of others."

The incident occurred on the 11th anniversary of the September 11 attacks in New York, Washington and Pennsylvania, as crowds gathered in somber remembrance of the nearly 3,000 people killed that day.

It is not clear which film upset the protesters in Cairo.

In 2008, an anti-Muslim and anti-immigration parliamentarian from The Netherlands sparked international outcry when he produced a film that portrayed Islam as a violent religion.

Geert Wilders' film "Fitna," which he released online, featured images of terrorist acts superimposed over verses from the Quran.

Over a film?!

I don't remember the politicians name but the day after the 9/11 attacks he suggested bombing Mecca, could you imagine the shit storm that would follow?

who needs to bomb Mecca? Just put Mohammed in a comic strip.

MAIDUGURI, Nigeria (AP) — Nigerian Muslims protesting caricatures of the Prophet Muhammad attacked Christians and burned churches on Saturday, killing at least 15 people in the deadliest confrontation yet in the whirlwind of Muslim anger over the drawings.

It was the first major protest to erupt over the issue in Africa’s most populous nation. An Associated Press reporter saw mobs of Muslim protesters swarm through the city center with machetes, sticks and iron rods. One group threw a tire around a man, poured gas on him and setting him ablaze. …

Thousands of rioters burned 15 churches in Maiduguri in a three-hour rampage before troops and police reinforcements restored order, Nigerian police spokesman Haz Iwendi said. Security forces arrested dozens of people, Iwendi said.

Chima Ezeoke, a Christian Maiduguri resident, said protesters attacked and looted shops owned by minority Christians, most of them with origins in the country’s south.

“Most of the dead were Christians beaten to death on the streets by the rioters,” Ezeoke said. Witnesses said three children and a priest were among those killed.

It was revealed the rioters were taught the Muslim religion in Egyptian Charter Schools funded by vouchers from the general education fund.

A US consulate worker dies today in riots at the US embassy in Libya, and this kook makes jokes about charter schools in order to try and make some lame political point.

religion of peace strikes again!

The Coptic Christians in Egypt would have protested as well, since Obama put them in a terrible spot, but they would have been slaughtered like sheep by the Muslims rioting at the US Embassy.

Nice job in Egypt, Obama, you fucking failure.

Libya too. I notice that Obama has yet to put out a statement about the US consulate worker killed today while the animals were attacking the US embassy there.

He's a fucking failure on the economy, and he's a fucking failure in foreign policy. Hey, at least he supports gay marriage, but won't do anything substantive to actually change the law regarding it!!

1. I wasn't joking, and there's nothing lame about the point I was making. Unless you prefer Egypt's Constitution to ours.

2. Guess they didn't teach geography in your charter school. Cairo is in Egypt.

Riots were in libya too

{Poasted via palm pilot}

Riots are everywhere, pretty much an ongoing thing. I really don't have time to post about each riot.

But for you and PapaG, maybe this will suffice:

I commented on the Egypt riot. Now I'm being attacked for not including the unrelated Libyan riot?

You're both guilty of ignoring this American murdered in Georgia,

and this woman and her daughter who were raped!

I guess you don't care about them. You and PapaG would rather attack my political comments.

Shame on you both! :tsktsk:

Worst. Movie. Ever. High school production values. The main message is that Mohammad was a pervert, along with everything else they can accuse him of. The makers deserve a locust plague of Arab protestors armed with swords.

The consolate worker in Libya that was killed was our ambassador.

there were four consulate workers killed in libya, one was the ambassador that helped free Libya. It is sad when we let ourselves be ruled by religion and anger.

Jesus. What a catastrophe. It's no surprise, however. This is what happens when you project weakness in a region that respects (and fears) the "strong horse".

Did anyone see the original statement from the Cairo Embassy? It was, in essence, an apology for that ridiculous movie offending Muslim sensibilities. If we're going to stand for our values, the First Amendment should be first among them.

I don't think there is an easy answer here. "i'm sorry but our laws dictate your religion can be insulted, just like ours. But please don't be violent if you're mad at us."

newsflash genius, they were related.

US ambassador plus three others killed in rocket attack on 9/11.

An act of war? I'm sure Obama will put out a harshly-worded statement, and then do nothing about it since he's the fucking failure who ousted Khadaffi in the first place.

"The Embassy of the United States in Cairo condemns the continuing efforts by misguided individuals to hurt the religious feelings of Muslims – as we condemn efforts to offend believers of all religions. Today, the 11th anniversary of the September 11, 2001 terrorist attacks on the United States, Americans are honoring our patriots and those who serve our nation as the fitting response to the enemies of democracy. Respect for religious beliefs is a cornerstone of American democracy. We firmly reject the actions by those who abuse the universal right of free speech to hurt the religious beliefs of others"

It's not an act of war. No more than a riot in one of our cities is.

It's probably not a good idea to maintain embassies in unstable and hostile nations.

I don't think there is an easy answer here. "i'm sorry but our laws dictate your religion can be insulted, just like ours. But please don't be violent if you're mad at us."

Why do you think they felt they could be violent? Because they know we won't do anything. We won't stand for our values. History has shown the only thing the Arabs respect is strength. Show them you're not fucking around, hit them back twice as hard and they'll cower.

Case in point: Do you remember when Islamic radicals were kidnapping westerners in Lebanon? They'd take our people and we'd negotiate or pay them off. A group took a Soviet embassy employee and made ransom demands. The Soviets took a relative of one of the kidnappers, cut him in into chunks and sent their response with a garbage bag of his remains attached. That employee was released unharmed the same day and no other Soviet citizen was ever kidnapped again. Barbaric? Perhaps. But it was effective and in the end likely saved lives.

What we perceive as our strength (our humanity), they perceive as weakness. So, to paraphrase Marsellus Wallace, it's time to get Medieval on their asses.
