Quentin Tarantino's film editor Sally Menke, who edited every Tarantino film from Reservoir Dogs (1992) to Inglourious Basterds (2009), died while hiking with her dog during yesterday's massive heat wave in California. Menke, 56, was found on a Los Angeles hiking trail. Her black lab stayed by her side. It was the hottest day in Los Angeles since they started recording the temperature, reaching a scalding 114-degrees F (~45d Celsius). Though an autopsy has not yet been performed, police at the scene say no foul play is suspected. I'm upset by this because I think Tarantino is a fine filmmaker and Menke's collaborative trademark is stamped on nearly all of his work.
Menke was twice nominated for an Academy Award for editing, once for Pulp Fiction, and again for Inglourious Basterds. Other films include Mulholland Falls, All the Pretty Horses, and Teenage Mutant Ninja Turtles (1990).
