Responding to the McDonalds thread, I realize that I don't have enough options for good healthy lunches.

Right now I rotate between: The Chicken Bar, The Sub Shop and Sushi.

But I burn out on these places and on any given day can cave to places like Panda Express, Mexican Food, Italian, Thai or a burger joint.

So what do posters here do to eat a quick but healthy lunch (besides bringing lunch to work which I tried and just isn't me)

Just remember McDonalds = Nasty $hit and you should be OK!

Jamba Juice?

I usually get a sandwhich. Or Wahoo's fish tacos. Whole foods wraps or salad bar. Rotiserre chicken places (California Chicken Cafe out here).

there are a few vietnamese places in Beaverton, that's usually really healthy stuff. The Veggie Grill just opened up at cedar hills crossing, its really good shit.

I think the healthiest thing you can do is cut out red meat. I have done that recently.

Thanks for the info. I'll go try the Veggie grill. I love Vietnamese food and Pho Van is just a stone throw away from here. But I'm not sold the food is healthy . . . they use a lot of oil and the meant isn't always the best cuts, even the chicken is fatty.

The World's healthiest meal replacement shake. Taste's good and provides the antioxidant power of more than 10 servings of fruits and vegetables. PM if you're interested.

Not to mention pho is sodium overload and youre hungry again in a few hours

get a bun cha, its pretty healthy as long as you don't get the fried eggrolls. Grilled proteins are nice too. I like Best Teriyaki too. Not healthy but I used to love going to Izzys for their lunch buffett. Lots of korean restaurants too. If you stay away from red meat, you should probably be pretty good. No fried shit either.

Dim Sum over at Jin Wah too.

Too much red meat can be bad, but you don't have to have ZERO red meat. Beef can be a very healthy part of an excellent diet. Much better then the massive carb load many people think is healthy from Subway. If you arn't an endurance athlete you hardly need any carbs in a diet.

I don't do zero red meat, I have it on occasion. I love burgers and steaks still, but I've made a conscious effort that when there is a choice, to try to reduce it though. opt for a grilled chicken sandwhich and side salad over a cheeseburger and fries. that kind of shit.

If ya want healthy, you gotta bring it from home.

yup. I keep a rice cooker at my office. I'll start up some whole grains and then add some broccoli/vegi's, protein(s) of some sort & some curry or flavoring later on. Some simple prep at home plus tupperware and I'm eating healthy & cheap. I'm also more efficient with my time not having to wait in lines to order and then for my food. I can work right up until it's ready and then get right back at it, take a stroll, or a short nap depending on how my day is going.

The mindset of food in isolation being completely “good” or “bad” is a bunch of crap. Just like the suggested food pyramid diet many of us were taught as kids. The exact same entree could be exceptionally healthy to one person walking into a restaurant and total crap for the next person.

The most significant part of a diet is total calories and macro ratios. Macros are the percentages of protein, fats, and carbs that comprise the calories. Also getting a balance of Poly/Mono/Saturated fats and the required vitamins and minerals.

Most people have no idea what macros they are getting, they drink non-fat Milk because they think its gives them a bunch of protein and fat is "bad". Hey genius, non-fat milk is 62% carbs and 38% protein. So yeah nice job loading up on CARBS.

Whether a particular lunch is healthy or not depends on how YOUR TOTAL diet is structured. If you don't track these figures you're shooting blind just hoping your diet choices are healthy.

This except i even make the rice at home, it doesn't taste quite as fresh but still good and i go heavy on the broccoli and other vegi's. I also have pretty much cut out red or really fatty meats at home and instead will wait until the couple of times a month i go out to eat to get my taste of a burger or steak.

just by watching what i eat and excersing a few times a week i've dropped over 75 lbs in about 18 months. then i got lazy and ate a bunch of crap i shouldn't and put some of it back on quickly, thankfully i got it under control and lost what i had gained plus another 15 and made it under 200 lbs for the first time in my adult life.

I need to get out of the office at lunchtime.

Are you in Beaverton? If you are try:

The Veggie Grill

http://veggiegrill.com/visitus.html

and Cafe Yumm

http://www.cafeyumm.com/

if you are in Portland proper you have a lot more options to choose from when looking for healthy dining.

Food cart culture is pretty big in Philly as well. Lots of healthy options too (although EVERY SINGLE TRUCK sells a cheesesteak). I had a falafel salad today from this Egyptian food truck that was out of this world.

falafel is deep fried yo.

This was my lunch today. buttermilk baked chicken sandewhich and greens.

Agree. And it's not really trouble. Sounds like you're a single guy, yes? So make a pot of soup, very easy, takes time to simmer but no real work beyond chopping, divide into 4-6 containers, freeze. That's 4 lunches. Make a salad and add sauteed chicken breast, or garbanzos, or other legume. Takes 5 minutes (that's if you used canned beans; I don't, but am trying to make this easy). Cook a big pot of pintos and make your own burritos, make a ton, freeze in individual portions. Believe me, there are a million cookbooks and web sites on exactly this question. Cheaper, healthier, lower in calories.
