Who are some of your favorite R & B artist/groups

Old School:

Stevie Wonder (I love Stevie...no homo...lol)
Al Green (not the biggest fan, but I like my fair share of his songs)
Lionel Richie (see Al Green)

Late 80's / Early 90's:

Babyface (extremely underrated singer, songwriter, producer, and buisnessman)

R. Kelly (the old R. Kelly before he started wearing masks and molesting children.....I'm talkin 12 Play R. Kelly........not trapped in the closet R. Kelly)

Boyz II Men (Boyz II Men was IT)

112 (they've fallen off as of late, but I love their older material)

D'Angelo (I wish he would get off the drugs, because D'Angelo can make that good soul music)

Joe (always been a fan)

Lauryn Hill (oh yes.)

New School:

*crickets chirping*

there are some fairly new people I like (Musiq, Floetry, Alicia Keys, etc.).....but as of the past couple of years not that many come to mind

Am I the only one who listens to R&B...lol.

I love R&B just as much as rap

Old school:
Chaka Khan, KCI and Jojo, Luther Vandross, Marvin Gaye

New School:
Alicia Keys, Mary J. Blige, Monica, Aaliyah

Some R&B people I really like right now are Ne-Yo, Mario (a little), City High, Usher, Kanye West (I like the guy), and R. Kelly.

It's all about Barry White!

I love R&B as much as I love rap. My favourites are Usher, Michael Jackson, and Trey Songz. At the moment, I'm listening to Joe and D'Angelo's Brown Sugar.

I actually like Alicia Key's music just as much as I like the Chili's actually. She's got to be my favorite female musician of all-time; maybe my favorite musician period. She's more of a "neo-soul" genre if you want to get technical, like Joss Stone, who's another favorite of mine who could fit in this category if you include Keys.

Lauryn Hill is also a genius, although I loved her work with the Fugees a lot better. *Plays "Doo Woop" (That Thing)*

this should be in the hip hop section IMO.

but some of the r&b artists i like as of now are neyo, bobby valentino, r kelly, chris brown (yes i like him), stevie wonder

Beats (though not necessarily raps) in hip hop are almost always in 4/4 time. At its rhythmic core, hip hop swings: instead of a straight 4/4 count (pop music; rock 'n' roll; etc.), hip hop is based on an anticipated feel somewhat similar to the "swing" emphasis found in jazz percussion. Like the triplet emphasis in swing, hip hop's rhythm is subtle, rarely written as it sounds (4/4 basic; the drummer adds the hip hop interpretation) and is often played in an almost "late" or laid back way.

This style was innovated predominantly in soul and funk music, where beats and thematic music were repeated for the duration of tracks. In the 1960s and 1970s, James Brown (known as The Godfather of Soul) talked, sang, and screamed much as MCs do today. This musical style provides the perfect platform for MCs to rhyme. Hip hop music generally caters to the MC for this reason, amplifying the importance of lyrical and delivering prowess.

Instrumental hip hop is perhaps the lone exception to this rule. In this hip hop subgenre, DJs and producers are free to experiment with creating instrumental tracks. While they may mix in sampled rap vocals, they are not bound by traditional hip hop format. - wikipedia

So basically, Hip-Hop has it's roots in Soul which is where R&B has it's roots, but they're two different genres. Just because they're both predominantly black genres though, they tend to get lumped into the same category, when they're separate types of music. However, if you want to get real technical about it, I guess that if you consider "hip-hop" to be a cultural influence, then R&B can be categorized as a "hip-hop" type of music, but from a purely musical point of view, they're different.

Keep educated em.....KRS One said himself that "James Brown was the first MC".....but yeah R&B and hip hop are two different things, although nowadays they both have similar sounds (which I think has watered down both genres).......we have too many rappers singing and too many singers rapping...lol.

Lauryn Hill is my favorite R & B artist, she is just incredible. Also wheres the love for Ginuwine??

ginuwine is pretty good....not one of my favs, but I like some of his songs.

i use to be a huge rap fan that i got into r&b and i cant listen to rap unless its like a mellow flow or something by nas biggie or jay z but anyways anything by 112 and jagged edge is good,

for the ones now i really like kanye even though everyone considers him rap, trey songz, neyo,

also donell jones is real good too

Don't really like the R&B out now unless it's Alicia Keys.

Through the Fire by Chaka Khan has to be my favorite R & B song.

What's your favorite R & B song?

My favourite R&B song of all time is definitely Usher's Bedtime. I listen to it everyday, just never get tired of it. Anyone else feeling this song.

Check up Lyfe Jennings...my favorite R&B artist besides Alicia Keys

CRAIG DAVID....he has got to be one of my favourite artists, if not my favourite artist.

Always loved Michael Jackson (even though he's pop but whatever) and my favourite artist list has to be:

Alicia Keys
Usher
Craig David
Massari

Oh, and Justin Timberlake's Justified album is pretty sick as well.

Some of my favorites

Musiq
Maxwell
MJ
Marvin
Life Jennings
Stylistics
Donna Summers
Tamia
Donell Jones
112 (first 2 albums)
O'jays

And more just dont feel like thinking.

<div class="quote_poster">Quoting MrJ:</div><div class="quote_post">No one else listens to the R & B Queen, Mary J. Blige?</div>
yeah "my life" thats it

What about "What's the 411?"

Classic album.

What about Monica? Nobody likes her either?

What about Aaliyah?

Monica was good in her day... never was a big Aaliyah fan though.

Anybody like that Mario Vasquez song Gallery? I really like it, guy has a good voice.

I'm not much of an R&B guy, but I really like "Take Your Hand" and "Follow Me" by Usher, they're pretty awesome songs.

Alicia Keys is my favorite. Old school back up singer to Luther Vandross Lisa Fisher one song how can I ease the pain released in 90 or 91 was a great song IMO. Damn she was singing, standing appaulse from the Apollo which is rear to see.

O Ginuwine and Tyrese got some songs that stay stuck in my head. From this year, I only can think of Keysha Coles. O yeah and Jamie Foxx.

Lately, I've been listening to a lot of Joe and Tyrese's first album. I never knew Tyrese was such a great singer, his album has a lot of great tracks. Man, Joe is just amazing. This dude just makes good music? What are some of y'all's favourite songs by Joe? Hmmm, I wonder if his new album will be good. It has a lot of guest appearances by rappers. I don't really like hearing rap on an R&B track.
