The Maine Red Claws (17-10), with a team-record 20 rebounds from Chris Wright, were able to break a two-game losing streak, defeating the Springfield Armor (8-16) Sunday afternoon at the Portland Expo Building, 120-112. The win moved the Red Claws back into a first-place tie with the Canton Charge.
The Red Claws opened the game with a quick basket from Wright before Scott VanderMeer traded baskets with the Armor. Springfield's Willie Reed got involved early, pushing the Armor lead to 13-9, but a pair of Micah Downs three pointers and an Xavier Silas free throw gave Maine the lead for good at the 6:17 mark. Wright and Omar Reed would each chip in six more apiece as Maine closed out the quarter with a 39-30 lead. Springfield scored the first four points of the second, with W. Reed and Brooklyn Nets assigned player Tyshawn Taylor scoring quick baskets before Maine went on a 13-6 run, capped by a Silas three pointer with Taylor in his face. Springfield went on an 8-0 run of their own before Wright and O. Reed closed out the half with a 61-53 Red Claws lead.
The Armor opened the second half with a 12-4 run, keyed by Ben Uzoh's seven points to cut the Red Claws lead to two, but Wright and Silas had the answer with an 8-2 run of their own to push the lead back up to eight. The teams traded baskets throughout the quarter before Maine used an 11-4 run, with nine points coming on free throws to end the third with a 91-79 lead. In the final quarter, the teams again traded baskets, with Maine maintaining a double digit lead through the remainder of the contest. Springfield closed the game on a 15-4 run, led by Taylor's eight points, but Maine held on for the 120-112 win.
Leading the Armor were Taylor (27 points, 11 assists, five rebounds), Dennis Horner (24), Uzoh (21 points, five assists), James Mays (17 points, 19 rebounds) and W. Reed (12).
The Red Claws were led by Wright's team record setting double-double (25 points, 20 rebounds, three blocks). Maine also got significant contributions from Silas (24), Downs (23 points, eight rebounds), Omar Reed (15 points, nine rebounds, five assists), team captain Chris Ayer (11), VanderMeer (nine points, eight rebounds, five blocks) and Andre Barrett (nine points, 12 assists). The Red Claws were playing one man down after waiving guard Champ Oguchi on Thursday at the player's request; Oguchi is expected to sign overseas.
The Red Claws will be back in action Thursday night at Fort Wayne before returning to the Expo to host the Rio Grande Valley Vipers on Saturday, February 2 at 7 PM.
