It's my birthday today, but today also marks the one year anniversary of losing Lanny. I remember as though it were yesterday. I was sitting in the dark in my class, the kids nestled down for nap time.
Finally able to take a breath and a break, I checked my phone for notices and birthday wishes. That was when my eyes caught the title of a thread I had dreaded for sometime. Lanny had passed. I sat there in that dark classroom and cried.
I knew Lanny didn't have long. It had gotten to the point that his doctors said their was nothing left to do. He had posted about his heart and his impending death. He devoted himself to kindness and exuded bravery and hopefulness even in the face of death.
That is the mark of one hell of a man. I gladly share this day with him, and attempt to follow his example. Every November 9th when I turn another year old, and have lived yet another year on this Earth, I will remember him, and honor his name.
I hope his wife Tammy and all who knew him are well. Remember his humor, his kindness, the stories he shared with us. We were so lucky to have known that dude. Wherever you may be today, lift a drink to Lanny. May he continue to rest in peace.
