Thoughts on this?

Isn't this what the Taliban is doing in Afghanistan? They are destroying ancient monuments which they see as against their value system.

New Orleans began removing the first of four prominent Confederate monuments early Monday, the latest Southern institution to sever itself from symbols viewed by many as representing racism and white supremacy.

Workers started removing the first memorial, one that commemorates whites who tried to topple a biracial post-Civil War government in New Orleans, overnight in an attempt to avoid disruption from supporters who want the monuments to stay, some of whom city officials said have made death threats, reports CBS New Orleans affiliate WWL-TV.

Workers who were inspecting the statue ahead of its removal could be seen wearing flak jackets and helmets. Police officers watched the area from atop the parking garage of a nearby hotel.

Then, it was gone:

Three other statues -- to Confederate Generals Robert E. Lee and P.G.T. Beauregard and Confederate States of America President Jefferson Davis – were to be removed in later days now that legal challenges have been overcome.

The city issued a statement overnight saying private funding had been obtained covering the cost of the removal of the four monuments.

“There’s a better way to use the property these monuments are on and a way that better reflects who we are,” New Orleans Mayor Mitch Landrieu said in an interview Sunday with The Associated Press.

But opponents of the removal of the monuments began a candlelight vigil very early Monday at the Davis statue, and things there got heated, WWL says.

So let's send the monuments that we remove to Afghanistan to replace the ones the Taliban destroyed. Problem solved.

Those statues are symbols of racism and white supremacy. They represent a close minded time. They should be taken down

we should keep all of the racist statues, and use them to teach people that racist statues exist. for history.

Washington owned slaves, right? And Jefferson?

We should take down all the monuments and rename all of the many "Washington" tributes across our country.

I'm not a southerner, but I never understood the glorification of a bunch of anti-American traitors anyway. This latest moral panic is kind of dumb though, I guess they should take down the American flag everywhere because it was present when soldiers were murdering Native American women and children too.

seriously, if there is a statue of any kind, you have to keep it right where it is, forever. or else you are isis.

if they really want statues, all they need to do is rise again. theyve been talking about it for long enough.

I think the thing that people forget is that the colonies used to be very individualistic. There was a ton of pride in coming from Virginia, or South Carolina, etc. That's why it was really a miracle that they were able to get the Articles of Confederation and the Constitution ratified by all the states.

These days there isn't nearly as much pride in where you're born. So when the North invaded the South, or tried to impose its values on the South, it was seen as almost another nation trying to destroy their way of life. So it's really not surprising that they kept the flags and the monuments as a "fuck you" to the North. With that said, times are different now, but I don't see the point in whitewashing the past. It's an important reminder.

Hey, they can just put a statue of an empowered 10 year old girl there to replace them.

They should put all the the shit in a museum. I'm sure there's holocaust museums in Germany. But I doubt there's statues commemorating Hitler, and SS scientists or generals, throughout Germany.

That's an assumption. I may be wrong.

When I heard they still flew the confederate flag in certain government places. My first though was: "Didn't we win that war?"

I guess it all comes down to what's being memorialized? I mean if, there's statues of Major Whats-his-face with in downtown New Orleans who was best known for "beatin' his negroes good" then yeah, I'm OK with getting rid of that kind of shit.

Not every memorial is the same.

el prez has a point though...do you take down statues of Ceasar or Napoleon or Genghis Khan? The Taliban destroyed the oldest Buddhist shrine on the planet....at some point statues of historical figures or events become art, not really celebration. They should not be adorning government buildings though..put them in a Civil War Museum or on a battlefield, etc...

When the south seceded from the Union and decided they needed their own money.

Reminds me of my genealogy research -- my gx3 grandfather was a confederate soldier (teen ranger) under General Mosby. Being that this side of the family are from Fairfax, Virginia it came to no surprise that I'd find a relative connected to this.

Firstly, let me say that I am glad to see a lot of reasoned, mature, and rational answers in this thread about this subject. I'm seriously impressed.

Because it's always better to whitewash history rather than memorialize the lessons to be learned from it, right?

There you go. Well said.

Yep. It would seem hypocritical to be selective with what we want to remove from our past. It's no secret that most of our country's past has dealt with a lot of racism and white supremacy over the past 240 years. Why now are we suddenly becoming offended by symbols of the Confederacy?

Well said. I'm not sure how removing statues of Stonewall Jackson and General Lee (who was an officer with the Union, whom declined an offer of Generalship with the North because he genuinely felt that state's rights were being violated; not because he supported Slavery) will be better for our country.

Lee is widely considered to be one of the greatest Generals and military minds who ever lived, and he was much loved by not just the South, but the North as well. And Jackson was also a brilliant military strategist who played a MAJOR role in the Civil War. Both of these men's strategies are still taught today in military colleges.

For some its like flying a rainbow flag. Just a symbol of pride.

Exactly. Most people who fly the Confederate Flag today don't view it as a symbol of racism. They view it as being synonymous with freedom, independence, and rebellion.

Well said. It goes back to what I was saying above. Just like not every German soldier was loyal to Nazi Supremacy and the eradication of Jews during WWII, so not every Southern Soldier fought for the continuation of Slavery. And there are many Confederate markings, plaques, sites, and symbols that tell of bravery, sadness, courage, daring, and brilliant leadership in times of war when it comes to soldiers from the South. Trying to white-wash history because it offends our sensitivities doesn't change history. Trying to nitpick every little thing that is offensive to people isn't going to change history either.

History has already happened; it's time to acknowledge it. Not attempt to ignore it.

Those who win the war gets to blow up the monuments.
