Republicans hold off Dems in recalls, win enough seats to keep majority in Senate

After tens of millions of dollars spent by outside interest groups, dozens of attack ads and exhaustive get-out-the-vote efforts, Democrats on Tuesday fell short of their goal of taking control of the state Senate and stopping the agenda of Gov. Scott Walker.

Republicans won four of six recall races, meaning the party still holds a narrow 17-16 majority in the Senate — at least until next week, when Sens. Robert Wirch, D-Pleasant Prairie, and Jim Holperin, D-Conover face their own recall elections. A third Democrat, Sen. Dave Hansen, D-Green Bay, easily survived a recall attempt last month.

Thanks for the info, I had forgotten to follow up on this outcome.

It's still iffy. There was one Republican (I think his last name is Schultz) who didn't vote for the collective bargaining bill. He could easily switch sides, which would give the Democrats the Senate. Of course, there are two more recall elections next week, both Democrats. If the Republicans win one (and I think they're favored in one of them), then the Senate is safe.

Of course, this is a bullshit tactic. It has nothing to do with what would constitute a "recallable" offense. It has to do with trying to redo an election.

The best bloggers on this issue are Ann Althouse (althouse.blogspot.com) and William Jacobson (legalinsurrection.com).

Wisconsin is crumbling into oblivion, mostly due to Walker's arrogance and his graft.

Wisconsin will eventually become one of the most liberal states in the union, but only after it goes completely bankrupt and Walker ends up in prison.

sorry, nothing is worse than the failed liberal experiment known as California.

California is by no means a liberal state.

"Liberal" does not mean excessive regulation of one's personal life, nor does it mean heavy subsidization of big business. These are the 2 main problems California faces. A close 3rd is the ridiculous power wielded by illegal aliens.

sure it does. its an entitlement society in which big government fails on multiple levels.

With only a 17-16 majority, there will be no more union-busting in Wisconsin. To pass any further action against unions, Republicans would have to vote unanimously, exposing the weakest 2-3 to a new round of recalls.

Because of these recalls, don't expect to see any more anti-union legislation in Wisconsin or any other state, at least for several years.

you've got to love it. in California on the radio they are starting to play ads suggesting that signature gatherers are identity thieves.

sponsored by...yep, you guessed it...organized labor.

For more than a week, a labor-backed radio ad reaching across California has claimed that signing ballot measure petitions puts people at risk for identity theft.
It's gained attention locally, where conservatives are collecting signatures to qualify a high-profile pension reform ballot measure for next summer's election. Local labor groups oppose the proposed measure and endorse the ad's identity theft warning. The ballot measure's local supporters say labor groups are airing the ad solely to derail the signature drive.
To help you sift through the spin, we're breaking down the minute-long ad in sections and examining its various claims.
The ad begins:
Woman: I just got back from the supermarket and those pushy signature gatherers are back.
Man: Oh honey, please tell me you didn't sign their petitions.
W: Well, yes, I did. Is there a problem?
M: You know you put yourself at risk to identify theft.
Maybe. Only your name, address and signature are required by election officials on the petitions. More common information used in identity theft, like Social Security numbers or bank account numbers, isn't required.

Old news from 2-3 weeks ago. Those ads ran for about a day and ended.

You heard the news, the ads on the news, or was it the actual live ads? Articles speak of them in the past tense.

I heard the ad as a live ad. I was driving and I thought it was a weird ad, then at the end they said it was sponsored by some labor group.

Okay. I don't live there.

The only time I've ever encountered someone soliciting me to register to vote was about 1989 when I was getting a driver's license in San Bernardino. As I left, this guy outside the DMV office sitting in a chair who looked like a wino did it. I had just moved there so I took a look. He thought I wasn't sure which party to register under, so he pointed to the Republican box and said, "Sign right there, brother."

I think both sides hire these people right off the street. Years later the Republlcans said Acorn did the same.

I get a bunch of people wanting to "end the wars" at the Starbucks by my work.

In the 1980's I had to walk the gauntlet in San Fran***gotcisco Int'l Airport. I was hit up for money by, literally, dozens of groups/people and had to nearly push my way through. Finally, my path was blocked by a gay nun (how could she tell?) for money for gay nuns and when she grabbed my arm after I refused to give money to her cause 3 or 4 plain clothes security people came out of the walls and whisked her away. I was grateful. Those security people were second to none- or is it 'second to nun'?

That's nothing. I was walking the streets of Calcutta when a bunch of Tibetan monks who do it with yeti got mad because I wouldn't contribute to monks who do it with yeti. So I gave them my bag of onion-flavored chips and it kept their whole cave alive for a week.

Nah the Unions blow, you can't dunk a basketball I don't care about your skills. :O
