<div class="quote_poster">Quote:</div><div class="quote_post">His steady improvement brings to mind one of the best deals the San Antonio Spurs never made. During the summer of 2003, the team pursued New Jersey Nets free agent point guard Jason Kidd, who had just lost to Parker and the Spurs in the Finals.
"It was just that summer of '03, and then after that I forgot about it," Parker said of the Spurs short-lived romance with Kidd. "Then I was just focusing on me trying to improve and get better as a basketball player. I always wanted to improve anyway. I didn't need that to want to improve because I think that they when you don't improve, something is wrong with you. It was a little wrong for me, but I still wanted, as myself, to try to get better as a basketball player."
Kidd debated long and hard whether to join Duncan in South Texas before opting to remain in New Jersey. Had Kidd signed with the Spurs there is no telling what would have happened to Parker. There is a possibility that he could have play alongside Kidd but the general feeling is that San Antonio could have afforded to keep both point guards.
"I don't want to think about it, but if he came here, I don't think I would be here in San Antonio," Parker said on Friday. "I'm happy that it didn't happen because so far I'm having a great career here in San Antonio. I'm very happy to be here."
Kidd is still as talented as any point guard but he's also 11 years older than Parker, 25. Plus, Kidd had major knee surgery four years ago and is entering the twilight of his career. Parker on the other hand is about to journey into his prime years.</div>
