Houston Rockets assignee Isaiah Canaan led the Rio Grande Valley Vipers with 34 points to top the Austin Toros 123-116 tonight at State Farm Arena.
In addition to Canaan, Daniels scored 25 points. Tony Bishop, Jr. added 16 points, followed by Kevin Parrom with 15 points. Tim Ohlbrecht added 12 points and Dario Hunt scored a double-double 10 points and 10 rebounds.
Josh Howard led Austin with 28 points, followed by Jonathan Simmons with a double-double 23 points and 17 rebounds. Myck Kabongo added 20 points, followed by Dexter Pittman with 18 points.
Both teams fought for the lead during the first quarter. The score tied eight times before Daniels sunk a free throw at the 3:54 mark that sent the Vipers on an 11-3 run for their largest lead of the first quarter 33-24. At the end of the quarter, Simmons sank two shots at the line to cut the Toros' deficit to 33-26.
Austin opened the second quarter on a 13-2 run to take a 37-35 lead with 7:47 remaining in the half. However, a shot from behind the arc by Daniels stole the 38-37 lead for the Vipers. At the half, the Vipers led 64-49.
Midway through the third quarter, Daniels sank a three-pointer that gave the Vipers their largest lead 82-60. Simmons responded for the Toros with a shot at the line and a layup to send Austin on a 16-2 run and bring their deficit to 84-76 with three minutes left in the quarter. At the end of the third, Howard connected beyond the arc for the Toros to get within two points of the Vipers 90-88.
A layup from Westbrook gave Austin the 92-90 lead early in the fourth quarter. However, Bishop connected on a layup to put the Vipers back on top 105-104 with 8:04 remaining. RGV won 123-116.
