Rice suggests that Roy is closer to Ginoboli in what he means for the blazers than a Tim Duncan. Greg Oden is closer to Tim Duncan and means more to the franchise when it comes winning titles.

Thoughts?

Maybe he's talking about how Greg can have a huge impact on both ends of the court.

I think he is drunk personally. Yes, I agree whole heartedly this team goes as far as Greg takes them. But, for him to associate Ginoboli and Roy together is insane. In the end, the impact Roy will make will be higher.

I look at this team very differently than Rice! I think the team is built around Roy and LA, and Greg is a bonus if he pans out. LA and Roy are the foundation of this team and I'd say Batum, Joel, Rudy and soon to be Andre before Greg. GO has a ton to prove before anyone should be building around him.

Well, Roy and LMA could be the offense in a few years and Greg could be the defense.

Will see.

I don't mean to be rude, but have you watched the 4th quarter of a game recently? Roy is the offense now, not "in a few years"

You're not ;). You're right. But what I'm talking about is when this team starts winning titles.

Comparing B-Roy to Manu is not an insult to Roy. Manu is the engine that makes that team win titles. He is an incredible basketball player.

I think B-Roy will be better then Manu by the end of his career, but a healthy Manu and healthy Roy are not that far apart.

If Oden becomes half the player Tim Duncan is, then I would be extremely happy.

Rice is a fucking idiot.
Rice is hilarious, and very knowledgable, when he's not acting the clown. I guess I may yet again be in the minority in that I actually enjoy his schtick, at least in smaller doses. I thought the last part of last season he toned it down a little and started being more insightful. For me, I just want to watch the game and get a few insights here and there. The announcers and color guys who really get on my nerves are the ones who won't SHUT THE HELL UP. You know, the ones who think they are more important than the game (Like Bob Costas and guys like that).

Rice is a cool old guy with a ton of NBA knowledge. He is actually very respected around the game. You should see all the opposing coaches and players that make there way over to see him in other arenas and media rooms around the league. We are lucky to have him. I am of course biased, but like I've said in the past, get the NBA LeaguePass and you'll really see how lucky. There are some bad ones out there.

Hey HCP, don't ever stop posting, as I think you sorta intimated the other day, you are one of my favorite posters. This site isn't much good without the "good" poster like you.

Your check is in the mail son!

Abso-fucking-lutely. Manu Ginobili at his peak was a top five player in the world, I shit you not. Watch the 2005 playoffs - Manu carried that team. And it's no accident that the Argies are the only team ever to beat the US team TWICE.

Roy is not yet at the level Ginobili reached, but few people ever get there. (This is why it's very over-optimistic to compare Rudy to Ginobili.)

I'd say he's already HALF the player... I doubt very much that he'll ever be Duncan's equal on offense. But then again, Duncan was a relatively late bloomer - he wasn't ranked in high school and claimed it took him ages to get coordinated enough to dunk. He still doesn't look graceful ever - he's certainly no Olajuwon.

I think what Greg needs that Duncan has is a quiet iron confidence. If Greg really believed in himself, that would help a great deal. Of course, the other thing Greg needs that Duncan has is respect from the refs.

So... who's our Tony Parker? (Minstrel: you are forbidden from answering this.)

So... who's our Tony Parker?

Bayless. A scoring point who can slash and dish, shoot (not counting his sporadic playing time in his rookie season) and defend opposing point guards.

I only saw this later. By then it was too late and I had already answered. And once you say something on the Internet, you can't take it out. You know how it gets transmitted from one place to another, one server to another. Soon, it's in signatures, avatars, YouTube videos. It's even being printed on t-shirts. Viral atmosphere, your modern day Internet. Yes, I'd say that ship has sailed. I'll be more alert next time, though.

He's not wrong. If this team is every going to get to the championship contender level it'll be because Oden has risen to the point of being compared to the likes of Duncan. Roy's a nice player, but I don't think he's good enough to be the unquestioned best player on a championship team.

I think that's a bit extreme - Duncan is the best player of the last decade!

I see the Blazers as following the Pistons model, only through the draft, not through trades. We're shooting to have the best average talent.

Roy's a nice player, but I don't think he's good enough to be the unquestioned best player on a championship team.

I dunno - I think he's easily going to be Chauncey-Billups-at-his-peak good, if he's not already.
