RIP Dick Harter

Helluva a college coach. He failed as an NBA head coach for the same reason he excelled as a college coach - he demanded accountability, and expected his team to play hard every night. He was, however, an effective NBA assistant.

When I was a little kid, there was a low-rate TV station in Salem that used to show the Ducks games (taped) at 10:30 p.m. after the game. This was during the original Kamakazi Kids days. The intensity of the players and the fans was amazing. There's never been anything like it, before or since, and it was due to Dick Harter. It would get to the end of the game, the score would be like 50-50, the whole Pit would be shaking, the camera was shaking, Ronnie Lee would race up from behind to block a breakaway layup (ala Batum), then the Ducks would score the winning basket. At least that's how I remember it. :pimp:

RIP Dick. You were a maniac.

When I followed Walton at UCLA, Dick Harter was a name you heard all the time. He was respected down there.
