From Kerry Eggers:
Kenny Wheeler, one of the legends of Oregon newspaper sportswriting, died Sunday at age 86.
It was a great privilege to work alongside of Wheeler for 24 years -- from 1975 until his retirement in 1999 -- at the Oregon Journal and The Oregonian. He had started with the Journal in 1957, and by the time I became a newspaper reader in my teens in the late '60s, he was a must read.
The Portland sportswriters I most respected were Wheeler and Leo Davis of The Oregonian. They served as role models and later mentors when I was fortunate to work with both.
Wheeler covered the Trail Blazers for many years, including the championship season of 1976-77. He was among the best at his craft, and I'd love to see him join Davis some day in the Oregon Sports Hall of Fame.
