That's true. He can't be packaged with other players in the same deal but he can be packaged with picks I believe. I think that restriction applies until mid-August. But they could do two separate deals where they send Simmons by himself and then a young guy in a smaller second trade if the other team has a small trade exception or a small expiring contract to send to the Nets.

Then there's no point in trading him plus our young players for anyone. Pretty much the only thing we would be interested in is a larger expiring contract, and Simmons is already at ~$10.5M. Our options are pretty limited. Who would we get? Marbury?

Plus, the flipside of the coin is that we really don't need a larger expiring contract. If they continue doing what they're doing they will be able to field a competitive team for the next 2 years and have enough cap space to sign LeBron if he decides to come here.

what is so bad about simmons? He's a backup who could start in a pinch, i doubt we'll pay him anymore than 10 mpg average

The point in trading him would be to get better players in the starting lineup to try to be more competitive the next two years. The bench seems fine at this point but their starting lineup needs work.

I wonder what else they have up their sleeves. this is the biggest retooling I've seen any team do in quite some time.

Let's review. You're proposing that we trade Simmons plus undisclosed young players for someone who is better than Simmons, which means we wont be getting any young players in return. The quality of the player we get will depend on which one of our young guys we include. To get someone significantly better at that price range, we would have to include one of our major assets, currently Sean, Brook or Yi.

.... But since we'll need the salary room ( as you said, you don't want anyone who has a contract of longer than 2 years) to sign LBJ, it implies that we'll discard the player we acquire in order to get LBJ.

So we end up going from a possible playoff team to a possible 2nd round team ( at most), lose one of our major assets and make it less attractive for LBJ to come here? That seems pretty dumb.

Remember, the scenario here is that we want to have at least $15M available to sign either LeBron or Wade to an offer sheet, forcing their teams into a S&T. If you're thinking of a straight up S&T, then all of these machinations that Kiki and Thorn are doing are pointless.

The Nets have a glut at the wing positions and the PF/C positions. It would be in their best interest to clear this up. Yi, Brook and Anderson in all likelihood will not be traded this off-season. Krstic's status is still up in the air. There is a very good possibility that at least one of Boone and Sean will be traded. Marcus will be shopped as well. Now, it's clear the Nets front office wants to be competitive the next two seasons or else they wouldn't be making these moves by bringing in guys like Dooling, Najera, and Hayes. It would be dumb if they got these guys who could make the Nets just good enough to miss the playoffs while giving them a worse pick in the lottery. If they want to be competitive by making the playoffs then they need to improve their starting lineup. They mostly likely need to make some trades anyways. How many young bigs can they develop at one time and still be competitive?

That's what I'm saying. Simmons can be used in a trade as contract filler to match salaries for a good starter if they package him with some other assets. They could try it with Hassell, Swift and Van Horns contract as well.

And I think there have been reports that they could go after a shooter like Kareem Rush (if they clear some roster space). He could end up playing the back up 2 with Hayes shifting to SF and Najera to PF. They still have some of their MLE left over to spend.
