I had to put my dog to sleep today. She was 14yrs old, I got her when she was 8. My step son couldn't take care of her anymore so naturally Mrs PokerDog couldn't let the dog go to the pound. Roxy was a beagle/pit bull mix. I'm more of a Golden Retriever person myself, not a fan of pits so I was not eager to bring her home. But being a dog myself we soon sniffed butts and bonded. I grew to love that damn dog as much as any other I've owned.

Like me with the Blazers, Roxy had an obsession with squirrels. Absolutely hated them. Not sure if it was the pit or the beagle but I have never seen a dog climb a tree like she could. 10-20 feet up, chasing squirrels. It was amazing to see. And this is when she was 9yrs old. Anyway, dog hips and trees don't mix well, the last couple of years she's been arthritic. For the last week she just couldn't catch her breath anymore.

Rip Roxy! I'll give it a month but heaven will soon be squirrel free.

awwww man I am sorry to hear that. I do not look forward to this day ever w/my doge.

RIP Roxy.

Sorry for your loss man. Dogs are definitely mans best friend. Be proud you gave her a very well loved and spoiled(im sure) 6 years.

Condolences man. losing mans best friend is always terrible. im glad they give us so many fond memories before they pass though.

Fuck fuck fuck. One of the worst feelings in life. I'm glad to know you gave another crazy dog a good life.

We have three little weirdos now, usually stick with two at a time.

Sorry man. That sucks. We have an old Goldie/chicken mix and I am dreading the day we have to say goodbye to her.

When that terrible day comes pay to have the vet come to you. It does make it a little easier.

I wish I could write as elegantly about my dog as @crandc writes about her cats.

Here is one thing Crandc couldn't do with her cats.

Take the dog to the beach for the weekend, make sure you rent a room with two queen size beds so you can stick the dog in one all to herself when she is worn out and freezing from playing hours in the ocean.

Spoiled rotten! haha. everytime i try to crack down on my mut i fall for that damn dog stare and give her the pizza crust. she knows what a pizza box means. dog always gets the last bite. life is short. spoil them.

I love dogs so much. My dog is my baby and I can't imagine what I'm going to do when it's his time.

Sorry for your loss Sly, I'm already dreading this for my Lab puppy and he's only 6 months old.

Did you guys hear about the guy in England who took his dog out for his last walk on his favorite beach and invited everyone to join him?

Dogs are awesome. Sorry SPD. That's an awful experience. We put our red doberman down about 3 years ago and I still think about her often. RIP Roxy.

It's always the good ones that go....I've been through it..always a tough one. Hopefully end of suffering....lost our 16 year cat last year and it's no fun..sorry to hear the bad news Sly

Sorry Sly.

For the rest of you, something to think about: At some point, we are going to have to put Sly down... he's getting up there in years. What should we do to celebrate his last day? Let him poop in the sand one more time like Walnut?

Ouch! Sorry Sly.
When we had to put our Blue Merle down it really was a bad day. 14 years he lived too. We never did get another.
That dog was amazing, work stock at the ranch or play beach games. When I ask him if he wanted to go to the beach, he would go get his stuff. Come back with the Frisbee around his neck and ball in his mouth and go sit by the Tahoe.

I know you have said you have chihuahuas in the past.

I used to greatly dislike chihuahuas. Then my girlfriend (wife now) had one when we dated. Now we have two and god dammit i love the little shits. They are annoying as hell sometimes but they are my annoying as hell little shits.

I have one apple head and one deer head chihuahua.
