Trail Blazers Sign Brandon Roy To Multi-Year Contract Extension

Two-time All-Star extends career in Portland

PORTLAND, Ore. – The Portland Trail Blazers have signed star guard Brandon Roy to a multi-year contract extension, it was announced today by General Manager Kevin Pritchard. Per team policy, terms of the deal were not disclosed.

“This is one of the most exciting and important days in Trail Blazers history,” said Pritchard. “No one has played a bigger role in the rebirth of the franchise, both on and off the court, than Brandon Roy. While he’s a great player, he’s an even better person and I’m happy and proud to report that he’s going to be a Portland Trail Blazer for many years to come.”

Roy, 25, holds career averages of 19.8 points, 4.6 rebounds, 5.1 assists, 1.12 steals, 36.9 minutes and a 46.5% mark from the floor in three seasons with the Trail Blazers. The 2006-07 NBA Rookie of the Year and two-time NBA All-Star, Roy is one of two players this decade (LeBron James) to be named Rookie of the Year and appear in two All-Star Games in his first three NBA seasons.

“First and foremost, I want to thank our great fans and my family and friends for all of their support,” said Roy. “I also want to thank Paul Allen, Larry Miller, Kevin Pritchard, Coach McMillan, my teammates and the entire Trail Blazers organization. Each year they’ve made me feel more and more at home here in Portland and now this really does feel like home and will be for a long time to come. I’m just really excited to get to back to work and focused on helping bring another NBA Championship to Portland.”

Roy posted team highs of 22.6 points, 5.1 assists, 1.13 steals and 37.2 minutes to go with 4.7 rebounds in 78 games (all starts) last season, helping lead the Trail Blazers to a 54-28 record, a share of the Northwest Division title and the team’s first trip to the playoffs in six seasons. Among NBA leaders, Roy ranked 10th in scoring, 17th in assist-to-turnover ratio (2.63) and 23rd in assists.

Roy’s inclusion on the 2008-09 All-NBA Second Team marks the first time a Trail Blazer has earned All-NBA honors since Clyde Drexler in 1991-92.

The 6-6, 211-pound Roy started all six games for Portland in the 2009 NBA Playoffs, where he averaged a team-best 26.7 points to add to 4.8 rebounds, 2.8 assists, 1.33 steals and 39.7 minutes. His scoring average ranked seventh among all players in the 2009 NBA playoffs and ranked fourth all-time by a Trail Blazer in a single postseason.

Acquired by the Trail Blazers in a draft day trade on June 28, 2006, Roy was originally selected by Minnesota with the sixth overall pick out of the University of Washington in the 2006 NBA Draft.

+3 agreed all around. You still have the best avatar around btw.

Brandon's being named to the 2nd team All-NBA in his 3rd season is historically noteworthy. Very few guards in the history of the league have achieved this honor so quickly. It essentially means that you have established yourself as one of the top four guards in the league.

Roy is in elite company.

* Only seventeen guards in NBA history made the All-NBA team as quickly as Brandon.
* Only two players -- Big O (averaged a triple double for his first six seasons) and Jordan -- made All-NBA in their rookie years. Big O made first team (one of best two guards in league) and MJ made second team (one of four best guards in league).
* Three players -- Cousy, West and A Hardaway -- made first team All-NBA in their second season.
* Four players -- Isiah, KJ, D Wade, and Earl the Pearl -- made second team All-NBA in their second season.
* Three players -- AI, Frazier, and CP3 -- made first team All-NBA in their third year.
* Five players -- Magic, T Hardaway, Moncrief, Pistol Pete, and B Roy -- made second team All-NBA in their third year.
* Noteworthy is the list of great guards that didn't make it into the top four guards in the league in their third year, including (showing all-star game appearances): Kobe (11*, probably because he came in young), Clyde the Glide (10), Stockton (10), Kidd (9*), Payton (9), Ray Allen (9*), Mitch Richmond (6), Steve Nash (6*), and Reggie Miller (5),
* Of course, at certain times there may be more great guards, making it harder to break into this list.
* It's possible I missed a few players that should be on the list.

If the 2012 Maya prediction stuff goes down, at least it will feel good knowing the world will be destroyed with B-Roy under contract to the Blazers.

Great post. Repped.

I can't say that I feel 100% good about this signing; I certainly don't feel bad but...

As I understand it, the Blazers were willing to give him a 5 year max contract, even considering this might hamstring us financially somewhere down the line, even considering the state of the world economy. But Brandon (the guy who said in his initial interview with the team that he was only interested in helping the team win) was not willing to commit to our team for 5 years; he wanted a player option for the 5th year, and he got it. So if he decides there is a better situation for him after four years, he will leave the Blazers.

That gives him one more year of commitment than LeBron James, Chris Paul, Dwyane Wade, and Deron Williams gave their respective teams on their extensions. Also, with the 5th year being >$20 million, I highly doubt Roy will be leaving to start a new deal.

Four years is a long time.. I don't think you have to worry that far into the future. Enjoy the ride!

Also, it's actually 5 years, since the extension doesn't kick in until after next season. Roy is the franchise at this point.

You guys are probably right, he will be at an age when he finishes the four years that it isn't likely he will find a team that wants to pay him 20 million plus. I just wondering why this was such a sticking point for both sides.

Brandon was in a position where he could ask for the moon... I don't blame him for doing so.

He is a good enough player--and valuable enough to the franchise more generally--that the team was willing to give it to him.

SHOULD they have? I guess that's a question we can all ponder and even second-guess, but I (in spite of my willingness to defend the Blazers' negotiations that might have occurred in the last month) trust that it's a good investment. Roy is a special player and we have one of the wealthiest owners in sports in the entire world. He can afford it and we should be able to keep the team's talent well stocked in spite of giving him everything he asked for.

Did anyone else find this part funny.....

"First and foremost, I want to thank our great fans and my family and friends for all of their support," Roy said in a prepared statement issued by the team

LOL I mean seriously? The team prepared a statement for him thanking people?

Well, I'd read it as Roy prepared the statement (when they agreed verbally, or whenever), which was issued by the team once he signed.

Yes, that makes more sense. I misread it.

Most statements are prepared man. They don't just go up there and freestyle it. Stop crying.

No one was crying. I misread the statement. I read it as the Blazers prepared a statement for Roy where Roy thanked his family and such.

You need to relax, and realize that some of who complain don't do it about everything in every post. Maybe take a nice bath or something?

WHAT??//????//??/?//?? THE SKY DIDN'T FALL??/???q?//?? KP ISN'T AN IDIOT??/??Q?/?///?

I'VE BEEN CAMPING FOR A WEEK, AND FULLY EXPECTED ROY TO HAVE WALKED FOR NOTHING WHEN I RETURNED, AT LEAST THAT'S WHAT THE WHINERS WERE SAYING!!!!!!1111!1!11!!!!!
