The Verdict (8.0-10)
Some of director Ron Howard’s recent efforts have been laboured, clunky and overlong, most his notably adaptations of The Da Vinci Code and Angels & Demons. But here he cuts out the superfluous fat to construct a tight, tense tale about two remarkable men whose competition, for a brief time, captured the imagination of the world. In the process he’s crafted one of the best films of his career, and the movie that this adrenaline-charged sport so deserves.
