Salman Rushdie, 75, is stabbed on stage before speech on America being a haven for writers in exile in upstate New York - 33 years after Iran issued fatwah on him for novel Satanic Verses
  • Witnesses claim that Salman Rushdie, 75, was helped off the stage before his attacker was apprehended
  • Blood spatter can be seen on the stage and chair close to where the the author had been intending to give his speech
  • He was attending the CHQ 2022 event in Chautauqua, near Buffalo, when he was attacked
  • Rushdie’s London-based son Zafar, 42, is aware of the incident and his father has been seen being transported to an ambulance after the attack

Hope he's OK.....with a life filled with death threats I'd think he'd have long ago been in a witness protection program or something. ..he's an amazing writer...probably not the best choice to do the lecture circuit to promote his new book about his pseudonym while he was hiding.

One of the only authors I have attended an in person book reading for. Not my favorite author of all time or anything, but it seemed like too momentous an occasion to miss. Hopefully he pulls through. This world could use a little bit of his brand of truth/magical realism.

Salman Rushdie is on a ventilator, cannot speak, will likely lose an eye, his arm nerves are severed and his liver damaged: Cops raid New Jersey home of suspect, 24, 'with sympathies toward Iranian government' who stabbed author up to 15 times
  • Salman Rushdie, 75, was stabbed up to 15 times, including in the neck and in the abdomen
  • Rushdie's agent Andrew Wylie provided an update on his condition shortly before 7 p.m. on Friday
  • Wylie said 'the news is not good' and that, 'Salman will likely lose one eye; the nerves in his arm were severed; and his liver was stabbed and damaged'
  • Rushdie was attacked by Hadi Matar, 24, who rushed the stage before 'punching and stabbing' the author multiple times in front of horrified witnesses at a literary fair in Chautauqua, New York, near Buffalo
  • Rushdie wrote the Satanic Verses, which sparked in a culture war in 1988 in Britain, leading to deadly riots
  • The novelist was issued a fatwa by Iran's Ayatollah Khomeini in February 1989 and went into hiding for years

This is a horrible thing to have happen...far cry from Will Smith Slapping Chris Rock on stage but shows just how vulnerable people are at public speaking events. I hope he recovers as well as possible but this was vicious blood lust.

The end result of book banning. If the book is so evil no one may be allowed to read it, by extension the writer is evil.
A poster here said in so many words some books should be banned.

I can’t remember the last time I had Salmon. I don’t really like fish unless it is cod or halibut, so I’m reluctant to ever buy or eat it.

Cooking tip: puncture the skin several times with a knife first.

Satanic Verses was published about the same time as Brief History of Time. Some columnist wrote that both were best sellers but a lot of purchasers never actually read them.

I read both.

I read the Satanic Verses and another book of his I can't remember the title of but found him to be a very good writer.

I definitely went through a Magical Realism phase in my early 20s. Read a bunch of Rushdie, Marquez, etc.

I think my favorite of Rushdie's is The Ground Beneath Her Feet, which is a variation on the Orpheus/Eurydice story. Lots of rock and roll, angels, and prophecy.

Midnight's Children is also a great read, telling the story of India separating into 2 nations through the lens of children growing up in that era.

Was this a terrorist act or a religious wacko doing his own thing?
